Times change. Hollywood once celebrated white actors who slapped on an extra coat of Max Factor and played a person of color. Authenticity was impractical. No one was unduly concerned that an actor of color had missed an employment opportunity.

Hopefully that thinking has shifted. Awarding an Oscar nomination for those in blackface, yellow face or pretense of another ethnicity is only adding insult to injury. My choices for worst Oscar nominations include

1928 Warner Baxter as Mexican The Cisco Kid in In Old Arizona

1930 George Arliss as South Asian Raja of Rukh in The Green Goddess

1936 Akim Tamiroff as Chinese General Yang in The General Died at Dawn

1937 H. B. Warner as Chinese Chang in Lost Horizon

1937 Paul Muni and Luise Rainer as Chinese Wang Lung and O-lan in The Good Earth

1944 Aline MacMahon as Chinese Ling Tan’s wife in Dragon Seed

1946 Flora Robson as Haitian Angelique Buiton in Saratoga Trunk

1946 Gale Sondergaard as Siamese Lady Thiang in Anna and the King of Siam

1946 Jennifer Jones as Mestiza Pearl Chavez in Duel in the Sun

1949 Jeanne Crain as Black Patricia Johnson in Pinky

1950 Jeff Chandler as Apache Cochise in Broken Arrow

1952 Marlon Brando as Mexican Emiliano Zapata in Viva Zapata!

1955 Jennifer Jones as Chinese Han Suyin in Love is a Many Splendored Thing

1956 Yul Brynner as Asian Mongkut in The King and I

1959 Hugh Griffith as Sheik Ilderim in Ben Hur

1965 Laurence Olivier as Moor Othello in Othello

1982 Linda Hunt as Chinese Billy Kwan in The Year of Living Dangerously

1985 William Hurt as Brazilian Luis Molina in Kiss of the Spider Woman

2001 Jennifer Connelly as Salvadorian Alicia Lardé Nash in A Beautiful Mind
