I had this thought a little while back and decided it annoyed me too much not to at least try to do something about it. So I made this petition and I figure I’ll put it here. You can read it in the link if you wanna hear my argument. Thank you.
ReplyFebruary 8, 2020 at 12:59 am #1203334556I agree. There needs to be a sliding scale of 5-10 for every category. In fact, I think I’m gonna make a post of what every roster of Academy nominees would look like since 2009 if it was 5 to 10 nominees for every category.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 8, 2020 at 4:09 am #1203334614First: Best Picture should be strictly ten nominees. No need swinging between 8 and 9 when we have better movies to fill in the remaining spot (s).
Six best director noninees
Seven for lead acting and six for supporting
Five for the rest

February 8, 2020 at 4:23 am #1203334620Nah, but they should bump Best Picture back to straight 10.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 8, 2020 at 5:36 am #1203334654I would prefer Best Picture to go back to 5. I think adding additional nominees (like the Emmys and Grammys now do) cheapens the merit of the nomination. Call me old school.

Nothing wrong with old school. Keep the nominations, including best picture, at five. The cream of the crop, even if I often disagree with the five they choose.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 8, 2020 at 6:36 am #1203334715No thanks. A solid 5 for every category except BP is a perfect number. Perhaps BD could be 6, but that’s as far as I’d go. Imagine 40 different actors nominated in a single year. Just sounds an absurd amount.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 8, 2020 at 8:36 am #1203334830Go back to having strictly ten BP nominees. Have six director, actors and actresses for their categories.
But otherwise, excluding the random sliding scale, I don’t mind the five nominations each that we get now. I hate how some people are not cracking the list despite what they do, but whatever… five is a solid number

February 8, 2020 at 9:21 am #1203334875So we see Meryl Streep nominated even more years? No thanks.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 8, 2020 at 9:43 am #1203334915I agree that Best Director and the acting categories should all be increased, (though I would only put Director on a sliding scale of 5-8 since 10 is too many for that category) but Screenplay should stay 5. There’s already 10 nominees a year with both categories and I think that’s enough.

What cheapens it, though? There is no award for being nominated, only if you win. If this was the Olympics and I was asking for everyone from 1st to 10th place to receive a medal, that’s different. This is all about the continuous controversy the Oscars get every year and increasing those few categories would likely put a 99% complete stop to it. The ballots are supposed to display the diversity in last year’s films. As I said in my petition, having no female directors or Asian actors or actresses is not doing that properly.
By the way, I’ve seen 3 new signatures since posting this thread. Thanks so much, guys, this means a lot to me!

A nomination already is a recognition of the work. It means and signals that you’re worthy to be declared the best of the year. If it weren’t, then there would be no point to even have nominees in the first place, because a nominee would be worth as much as a non-nominee. So just consider everyone a candidate and just announce a winner without a preliminary filtering process.

And I agree, it would be more genuine if voters did watch everything for the year and decide which film/director/actor is the best they’ve seen. But the point of the argument in my case is the persistent controversy. Having no nominations is just gonna do even more to stir up the lack of diversity, and as I said, I don’t believe that 5 nominees is enough for most categories, especially in a year like this when there was plenty of female and minority candidates to go around and yet only 2 got on the ballot (1 director, 1 actress). The controversy’s just gonna continue and more nominees is the surest way to avoid it. Practicality’s not the point here.
