Picture: The Father (The late release and screeners prevented it from being nominated at PGA but the Actor and Screenplay win assures it was the runner-up. BAFTA choosing Promising Young Woman for Best British Film is similar to when BAFTA chose Theory of Everything over Oscar winning Adapted Screenplay winner, The Imitation Game.
Director: Emerald Fennell (Chloe Zhao was the Sam Mendes of the season except she won so I think an extreme passion pick would have to defeat her by a country mile which I think would be Emerald with her strong screenplay win. The cinematography win for Fincher does not mean much since Mank was not nominated for screenplay).
Adapted Screenplay: Nomadland
Original Screenplay: Judas and the Black Messiah (The song win, Lakeith nomination shows how strong Judas was with voters and how much passion it received. Song was most likely its second Oscar consolation prize since it wasn’t going to beat PYW in screenplay).
Cinematography: Nomadland
Best Actor: Chadwick Boseman
Best Actress: Carey Mulligan (British block would have carried her and it seems like the Academy was quite apathetic to Ma Rainey in general)
Best Supporting Actor: Paul Raci (Passion for Sound of Metal was there for its 2 Oscars and apathy to Trial of Chicago 7 would continue)
Best Supporting Actress: Olivia Colman (No one was beating Youn with 2 industry precursors and certainly not Maria with only Critics Choice. Boseman’s loss here shows narrative isn’t as strong as passion so Close was most likely 4th. Colman would have the British block and passion for The Father surging in the Supporting Actress category)

The cinematography win was a massive upset though and director + cimematography usually have a correlation. It didn’t need to be nominated for screenplay for him to be second.

The screenplay snub shows a general apathy towards the film though that it would be difficult to get an above the line win. I’m pretty sure all Best Oscar directors had their film nominated at BAFTA too.

April 26, 2021 at 3:07 pm #1204230216Picture: Many of you are saying The Father, but I don’t think we had an actual runner-up this year. Like Slumdog Millionaire, The Artist and Argo and other years, it’s very hard to talk about a specific runner-up because everyone besides the winner had such strong weaknesses.
Director: I suppose it was David Fincher, by an abysmal difference with Chloe Zhao. Mank surprising win in Cinematography suggests it still had some strength. Directing and Cinematography have been correlating in the last years.
Actress: It’s really hard to tell due to how divided the race was. I have no idea. It could be Mulligan but I’m not sure.
Actor: Boseman, obviously.
Supporting Actress: I still think it was Bakalova. The Father overperformed in many ways, but Colman still lacked passion. All the buzz was in Hopkins and the play adaptation.
Supporting Actor: Probably SBC because he still had a great year and campaigned a lot. Raci was more a passion pick than an actual runner-up.
Screenplay: Nomadland and Chicago 7
