Paltrow has a fraudulent Oscar that should have been Blanchett’s. Let her have her GOOP empire now. She doesn’t need acting, and acting doesn’t need her.
ReplyCopy URLAugust 11, 2020 at 6:36 pm #1203640913It’s nice to see the posters praising Fernanda Montenegro work! Here in Brazil she’s celebrated as the best actress ever and everyone thinks she was robbed.
ReplyCopy URLAugust 11, 2020 at 7:01 pm #1203640954She’s alright I guess. Her Oscar needs to be returned though.

Gwyneth Paltrow – Shakespeare in Love – WINNER
Cate Blanchett – Elizabeth
Fernanda Montenegro – Central Station
Meryl Streep – One True Thing
Emily Watson – Hilary and JackieI have seen all of the performances with the exception of Meryl Streep. Of the 4 performances, I would have ranked Gwyneth in fourth place giving the win to either Fernanda Montenegro or Cate Blanchett.

Blanchett
Paltrow
StreepGwyneth is fine. Liked her on Glee.

Watson was actually AMAZING in Hilary and Jackie
ReplyCopy URLAugust 15, 2020 at 9:34 am #1203646958I’m actually kind of impressed the Academy even nominated Fernanda Montenegro.
Not because she wasn’t worthy, but it still seemed so rare at that time for foreign language performances to be noticed. It’s still somewhat of a feat to even have one nominated in the present day, especially when you have a film with passionate support like PARASITE not getting a single acting nod when half of that cast deserved to be nominated or actually win.
Montenegro deserved to win that Oscar with Blanchett right behind.
After that, I would’ve ranked it as follows:
#3-Watson
#4-Paltrow
#5-Streep(It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the film but Ally Sheedy for HIGH ART would’ve been cool to see slip into this race.)
As for Paltrow, I think she is a decent to good actress but she’s never blown me away in a performance. I think her best work would have to be THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS but I just never find myself eager to revisit a film strictly for her work.
In SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, she is solid at best but I didn’t find her Oscar worthy in the slightest. She probably wouldn’t even be nominated on my ballot.

August 15, 2020 at 9:57 am #1203646980I think she’s competent and can churn out very good performances (Talented Mr. Ripley, Proof) but there’s this revisionist history that awards forums and some part of Film Twitter tries to conjure up by acting as if she was actually this fantastic actress that got trashed for no reason. She’s fine for the most part.
And no, Blanchett wasn’t robbed for that merely adequate Elizabeth performance.
ReplyCopy URLAugust 20, 2020 at 11:12 pm #1203658009goop’s performance in two lovers is especially fantastic. she had to make an unlikeable character feel sympathetic and relatable and she completely nails it. she oozed charisma and was able to explore a more vulnerable side to her acting.
she has also been delivering strong work on TV for years.
sure, she isn’t the most easy to relate to celebrity there is out there but her acting chops are mega underrated imo
regarding the race in 1998, montenegro obviously deserved with one of the best oscar nominated performances of all tine
