Her career reminds me of Cher. Cher worked so hard to be a serious actress then when she made it she started doing those hair care infomercials that ran all the time on TV and it started to ruin her image again. (Would Meryl sell hair spray at 2am?) Plus she didn’t do many films. Then the respect seemed to be gone for her acting after a while.

Same with Gwyneth. The goop stuff started to overshadow her skill as an actress. Plus she has that bratty quality that makes people like to see her fail.

Paltrow has a fraudulent Oscar that should have been Blanchett’s. Let her have her GOOP empire now. She doesn’t need acting, and acting doesn’t need her.

It’s nice to see the posters praising Fernanda Montenegro work! Here in Brazil she’s celebrated as the best actress ever and everyone thinks she was robbed.

She’s alright I guess. Her Oscar needs to be returned though.

    LEAD ACTRESS OSCAR

Gwyneth Paltrow – Shakespeare in Love – WINNER
    Cate Blanchett – Elizabeth
    Fernanda Montenegro – Central Station
Meryl Streep – One True Thing
Emily Watson – Hilary and Jackie

I have seen all of the performances with the exception of Meryl Streep. Of the 4 performances, I would have ranked Gwyneth in fourth place giving the win to either Fernanda Montenegro or Cate Blanchett.

I’m not familiar with her filmography so don’t have much to say. She was definitely better than Blanchett in 98 though.

Watched them all. My order would’ve been…

    Montenegro
    Watson
    Blanchett
    Paltrow
    Streep

Gwyneth is fine. Liked her on Glee.

I just love movies. And awards.

    Decent actress.

Gave good performances in “Proof” & “The Royal Tenenbaums”.

Her win for “Shakespeare in Love” wasn’t bad just not the best in the category.

She’s also an insufferable, privileged, out of touch, celebrity.

    R.I.P Chadwick Boseman

Cate Blanchett should’ve won the Oscar

    30 Years of Ghost.
    2 Academy Awards
“Molly you in danger girl” - Oda Mae Brown
    R.I.P. Patrick Swayze

I’m actually kind of impressed the Academy even nominated Fernanda Montenegro.

Not because she wasn’t worthy, but it still seemed so rare at that time for foreign language performances to be noticed. It’s still somewhat of a feat to even have one nominated in the present day, especially when you have a film with passionate support like PARASITE not getting a single acting nod when half of that cast deserved to be nominated or actually win.

Montenegro deserved to win that Oscar with Blanchett right behind.

After that, I would’ve ranked it as follows:

    #3-Watson
    #4-Paltrow
    #5-Streep

(It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the film but Ally Sheedy for HIGH ART would’ve been cool to see slip into this race.)

As for Paltrow, I think she is a decent to good actress but she’s never blown me away in a performance. I think her best work would have to be THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS but I just never find myself eager to revisit a film strictly for her work.

In SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, she is solid at best but I didn’t find her Oscar worthy in the slightest. She probably wouldn’t even be nominated on my ballot.

I think she’s competent and can churn out very good performances (Talented Mr. Ripley, Proof) but there’s this revisionist history that awards forums and some part of Film Twitter tries to conjure up by acting as if she was actually this fantastic actress that got trashed for no reason. She’s fine for the most part.

And no, Blanchett wasn’t robbed for that merely adequate Elizabeth performance.
