Didn’t see a post for Toronto so I thought I’d make one since it’s upon us. This is my most anticipated film festival by far, and we all know the importance of its audience award. 90% of the winners at TIFF over the course of this last decade have gone on to get a best picture nomination at the Oscars, 54% of named films (including runners up) since 2010 have gone on to get a best picture nomination, and that number goes up to 60% if you look at the last five years.

The festival runs from 9/5/19 to 9/15/19. Here are some of the big contenders for reference:

The Personal History of David Copperfield
    Just Mercy
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
    Pain and Glory
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
    Knives Out
    Hustlers
    Dolemite Is My Name
    The Lighthouse
    Parasite
    The Aeronauts
    The Report
    The Goldfinch
    Marriage Story
    Jojo Rabbit
    A Hidden Life
    Ford v Ferrari
    The Laundromat
    Joker
    Uncut Gems
    The Two Popes
    Harriet
    Judy
    Motherless Brooklyn
    Honey Boy
    Waves
    Lucy in the Sky
    Clemency

I’m excited to see how the race shapes up after.

I can’t wait to see the reviews for Harriet. More for Clemency too.

Taron Egerton (Rocketman) for best actor. Charlize Theron looks great in Bombshell teaser

I’m looking forward to Harriet as well. I know a lot of us dismissed the trailer, but the Actress race would become so interesting if Erivo got raves.

I believe this is the list of dates for first reactions:

9/5: Personal History of David Copperfield

9/6: Just Mercy, Blackbird, Hope Gap

9/7: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Abominable, Knives Out, Dolemite is My Name, Hustlers

9/8: Bad Education, The Goldfinch, Jojo Rabbit

    9/10: Harriet

9/11: Lucy in the Sky, Dirt Music, True History of the Kelly Gang

    9/12; Western Stars

    9/14: Radioactive

Please correct me if I have gotten anything wrong.

Who’s winning the audience award? I feel good about Waves. I also think Ford v. Ferrari can crack top 3.

I think Parasite might get the audience award it’s a very accessible movie and is already a box office hit in Asia

I think Parasite might get it

I don’t think that’s a bad choice. TIFF skews more mainstream than Venice or Cannes or even Telluride which is why I was hestitant. I have no clue how Parasite plays to a more commercial audience, but I think TIFF is a decent barometer.

I’m going to guess Two Popes, Marriage Story, or Jojo Rabbit as a wildcard (they seem to like their comedies)

Wow that’s a stellar record. I think Marriage Story is the safe choice, but I’m going down on the Just Mercy ship.

Top 3 prediction – Marriage Story, Parasite, Waves. If I had to pick a winner I’d go Parasite.

Tough to call though as I think safer bets are probably A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood, Just Mercy, Jojo Rabbit or Ford v Ferrari but I just have a very good feeling about Marriage Story and Waves whilst Parasite seems to be a massive audience favourite everywhere its been so far.

    Final Top 3 Prediction:
    1. Waves- people were freaking out how good it was at Telluride and kinda has the sleeper factor that worked for Green Book
    2. Jojo Rabbit- could be really powerful and funny which they liked with Green Book and 3 Billboards recently
    3. Parasite- they tend to have a critical favorite in their top 3 (Roma got third last year, Beale Street got second) and this seems to be the most loved by the critics
    ———
    4. Ford v Ferrari- I’m gonna regret not picking this
    5. Marriage Story- I’m gonna regret not picking this even more, just a gut feeling

    1. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
    2. Jojo Rabbit
    3. Marriage Story

Would be my predict for the order and win.
