Well played, Universal. Very well played. Haddish doesn’t even have a major project out to promote. This is blatant Oscar campaigning. I love it.
Haddish will be hosting SNL on Nov. 11th. Taylor Swift will be the musical guest so this combo will likely be a highly rated episode due to the anticipation from fans.
Are pundits still acting like Haddish isn’t a major Oscar contender? As a handful of us said during the summer months, GIRLS TRIP got good reviews but Haddish got extraordinary reviews and her buzz has continued throughout the year. Her hosting SNL during the thick of GG/SAG voting is intentional. And it puts her on the mind of critics’ awards voters if her appearance is well received.
Laurie Metcalf and Allison Janney are the only two likely nominees in supporting actress this year. There also aren’t many people of color in the Oscar conversation this year. These are additional bonuses for Haddish.
Melissa McCarthy got nominated at the Oscars WITHOUT a GG nomination (she got in at SAG and BAFTA). I’d argue Haddish has even more going for her.
Don’t sleep on Haddish, folks. She’s in this.October 30, 2017 at 10:55 am #1202397868
She and the brother from Get Out (the friend) needs to be perennial nominees this season in the supporting categories.October 30, 2017 at 11:35 am #1202397888
She was funny. She was great to watch. But she came off as too amateurish several times thanks to either bad direction or bad editing. I almost felt the same way about Latifah, so it has nothing to do with her being new-ish or not as experienced as the others.
But it’s the type of thing that if it happens (it won’t), well whatever, she seems like a nice girl and I like it when it happens to unexpected people.
By the way, it IS campaigning, considering how SNL is sometimes, when even the NBC talent can’t catch a break, how else can one explain this and Kumail Nanjiani hosting after months of their films premiering and weeks after they left theaters?October 30, 2017 at 11:48 am #1202397889
God please let this happen.October 30, 2017 at 11:52 am #1202397896
She has other things to promote, such as an upcoming TBS show, but ya, get that Oscar.October 30, 2017 at 12:39 pm #1202397934
As much as i loved her in the movie and she was the MVP i don’t think thats going to happen. Mary J Blige and Octavia already have the minority quota covered.October 30, 2017 at 12:43 pm #1202397937

Tiffany Haddish gave the funniest performance in any movie this year. If this were a White actress, more Gold Derby users would be behind the potential of a nomination. I mean, hello, Melissa McCarthy got in for “Bridesmaids”. That’s not exactly the most “Oscar friendly” movie. But she deserved her slot. So does Tiffany!October 30, 2017 at 1:23 pm #1202397965
Did Universal send out screeners to SAG?October 30, 2017 at 1:52 pm #1202397993
I’m praying for a Globe nom at least.October 30, 2017 at 2:32 pm #1202398045
The actors branch will want to avoid Oscars-so-white: Denzel, Octavia, Tiffany, Lil Rel. No acting category is overwhelmingly competitive this year but Best Actress and there are zero nonwhite contenders there.October 30, 2017 at 3:36 pm #1202398090

She’s so not getting in.
