While not especially statistically valuable for predictions, the American Film Institute’s top 10 films for each year provide a nice cross-section of what sort of films were either in or adjacent to the Oscars race.

The 10 films only have two real pre-requisites.

    1) The films must be American or American co-productions. So, even though a film like The Queen was a notable Oscars contender, it was not in the top 10, but Happy Feet was.

    2) The film must have premiered before the early December date. For example, The Revenant wasn’t in the list for 2015 despite being a big Oscars contender.

    Avengers: Endgame
    The Farewell
    Ford v Ferrari
    The Irishman
    Jojo Rabbit
    Joker
    Judy
    Marriage Story
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
    Toy Story 4

Iirc, AFI like WarnerBros, so maybe something like The Good Liar can spoil?

    Here’s my prediction

A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood

    Bombshell

    The Farewell

    Ford V Ferrari

    The Irishman

    Jojo Rabbit

    Joker

    The Lighthouse

    Marriage Story

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

    Notes

    1) 1917 and Little Women aren’t here because I’m not sure if they’ll premiere in time

    2) The Lighthouse is wishful thinking. The other candidates for that last slot are Toy Story 4/Avengers End Game for the blockbuster buzz or Waves/Just Mercy for more Oscars-adjacent.

    Marriage Story
    Jojo Rabbit
    The Irishman
    Ford v Ferrari
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
    Joker
    Parasite
    The Lighthouse
    Avengers Endgame

Parasite isn’t eligible for the Top 10 but I do think they will vote for it for a special award.

Oh yeah, true. I guess I’ll replace that with Bombshell. I think the SAG-AFTRA premiere counts.

Parasite will get special shoutout. Or honorable mention. LOL

7 out of 3 isn’t so bad. I didn’t think the 3 that got in counted because I thought it needed to have aired for everybody before their selection date. Ai yaiyai

5/10. Not too bad, especially since this was like a 2 month old prediction.

    2018- 5/8
    2017- 7/9
    2016- 7/9
    2015: 6/8
    2014: 6/8
    2013: 7/9
    2012: 8/9
    2011: 8/9
    2010: 9/10
    2009: 6/10

At least 2/3 will miss for BP nomination. (Avengers Endgame Obviously, Knives Out come to mind and maybe one of the following (The Farewell, Richard Jewel, Joker or Little Women)
