These are not my personal choices but going by the number of wins that actresses have gotten from the New York Film Critics (started in the 1930’s), the National Society of Film Critics (started in 1966) and the LA Film Critics (started in 1966) these are the actresses with the most wins (in both lead and supporting combined). Keep in mind that this does idisadvandage actresses from the 1930’s to mid 1970s:

    1. Meryl Streep (13 wins, 8 lead, 5 supporting)

    2. Sissy Spacek (8 wins, 7 lead, 1 supporting)

    3. Liv Ullmann (7 wins – all lead)

    4. Anjelica Huston (6 wins – 3 lead, 3 supporting)

    5. Julie Christie (5 wins – all lead)

=. Sally Hawkins (5 wins – all lead)

=. Holly Hunter (5 wins – all lead)

    =. Helen Mirren (5 wins – 3 lead, 2 supporting)

    =. Vanessa Redgrave (5 wins – 3 leads, 2 supporting)

=. Dianne Weist (5 wins – all supporting)

That makes ten. In all fairness because only the New York Critics were giving awards prior to 1966 its worth mentioning that these actress:

    Ingrid Bergman 4
    Deborah Kerr – 3
    Joanne Woodward – 3

    managed to get 4 & 3 respectively.

It kills me that Sally and Liv are the only dildoless actresses with that many The Big Three Critics wins. 😩

Its also really interesting the number of living actresses that have won an Oscar but have never won a critics award from any of the major three critic awards groups (New York, LA & National Society of Film Critics).

From the top of my head: Maggie Smith (that one shocks me to the core), Nicole Kidman, Marlee Matlin, Cher, Renee Zellweger, Marisa Tomei, Sandra Bullock, Louise Fletcher, Faye Dunnaway, Olympia Dukakis, Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Tatum O’Neal, Lee Grant, Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Goldie Hawn, Geena Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, Gwenyth Paltrow, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, Angelina Jolie….

That just shows golden dildos are pure popularity contest and nothing else. Btw have you ever met Juliet (Aunt Peg)? I’ve met her several times. She was absolutely delightful. Died too soon.

No, I would have love to have met her. I’ve only ever heard the nicest of things about her including that she was a big cat lover. She most definitely was taken way too soon.

After seeing the first three entries on your list, I got very excited that you were going to have a Top 10 list filled with only black actresses. Great list either way!

I understand and really appreciate your excitement since these black queens are often underrated. But some of these white women are really talented too (and usually get better material to work with anyway), I can’t deny it hihi

What sucks about Hollywood and Black actresses specifically is the lack of desire to see them flourish in dramatic material not rooted in cliche and stereotype. Especially when you know what they can do on the stage or with decent material for a TV project.

Kathy Bates for Best Supporting Actress (Richard Jewell)
