lets see how Paramount campaigns this film starting fall to see if it can squeeze its way into any of the major noms, for now Sound & Song are locked, w Cinematography, Editing, & Score a likely contender

Let’s be very clear: Tom can win for TOP GUN: MAVERICK. Let’s see what the rest of 2022 brings, but right or wrong, when the Academy decides it’s time, it’s time.

June 6, 2022 at 6:06 am #1204973902Lol he can bring decades-old stat all he wants but let’s be real, Tom does not have a chance for the role he played in this film.

Best Picture: Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Decision to Leave
Best Director: Park Chan-Wook Todd Field
Best Original Screenplay: Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Best Actor: Colin Farrell
Best Actress: Michelle Yeoh, Cate Blanchett, Tang Wei
Best Supporting Actor: Brendan Gleeson, Ke Huy Quan
Best Supporting Actress: Kerry Condon, Nina HossJune 6, 2022 at 12:35 pm #1204974309Someone tell Feinberg that throwing out a bunch of winning actors doesn’t make the analogy any better. Even when Smith won his career Oscar for being a box office star, he won it for a traditional baity role. Not happening until Cruise pivots back to prestige work.

ReplyCopy URLJune 9, 2022 at 1:52 am #1204976956I waited a very long time for the continuation of this cult film, for various reasons, the premiere date was postponed several times, this further fueled the expectation of meeting with long-familiar characters.

I have one BUT, for viewing I constantly have to turn on my vpn router, I don’t even know what it is connected with. I want to express special respect to the operators, I take off my hat and thank them for not spoiling the real beauty of supersonic flights with computer graphics. I will not spoil and retell the plot, I will only say one thing – the film is worthy of its beginning and you can watch it more than once, I am personally satisfied with the result and will definitely advise my friends to watch it.June 9, 2022 at 3:48 am #1204977017All of the jingoism and pompous fist-shaking seen in “Top Gun: Maverick” could have been intolerable in a different package. But, thankfully, Kosinski—whose underappreciated and underestimated “Only The Brave” will perhaps get a second chance now—seems to know exactly what kind of film he’s dealing with. The tone of “Maverick” strikes a wonderful mix between good-natured vanity and half-serious self-deprecation in his hands, with plenty of quotable zingers and unexpected emotional moments.

Ah, no. There’s no way this movie’s getting acting or screenplay noms and what production design was there?

Best Picture – Very likely
Best Director (Josph Kominski) – Possible if the film sweeps
Best Actor (Tom Cruise) – Likely
Best Supporting Actor (Val Kilmer) – Very unlikely, but not impossible
Best Supporting Actor (Miles Teller) – Possible if the film sweeps
Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Connelly) – Possible if the film sweeps
Best Adapted Screenplay – Very unlikely, but not impossible
Best Cinematography – Very likely
Best Film Editing – Very likely
Best Original Score – Very unlikely, but not impossible
Best Original Song (Hold My Hand)- Almost a lock
Best Production Design – No way
Best Sound – Almost a lockRight now I predict: Picture, Actor, Cinematography, Editing, Song and Sound (6 overall)
If the film surprises and is extremely well received I could see Director, S. Actor (Teller), S. Actress (Connelly) (9 overall)
Val Kilmer’s part is too short (almost a cameo) so I don’t see it.
The screenplay is not the type to get Oscar noms (See Titanic, Mad Max, etc.). So also I don’t see it.
Score is tricky since it uses a lot of the score from the original Top Gun. I don’t think it will get a nom there.
Production Design? Almost the whole film happens in real locations or inside the planes. No way in hell it gets a nom for it.
VFX is another tricky one since almost all are practical effects. But I don’t see it either here.

My doubts and your doubts seem to be opposite. I think acting noms won’t happen at the Oscar’s (Though a rogue GG or SAG nom for Cruise is possible). However, I do think it will get into VFX. Practical Effects are still respected (No Time to Die, Mad Max, and most of Christopher Nolan’s films are practical effects heavy). And even if it misses, watch out for a Special Recognition Oscar for the flight coordination.
