    Best Picture – Very likely
Best Director (Josph Kominski) – Possible if the film sweeps
Best Actor (Tom Cruise) – Likely
Best Supporting Actor (Val Kilmer) – Very unlikely, but not impossible
Best Supporting Actor (Miles Teller) – Possible if the film sweeps
Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Connelly) – Possible if the film sweeps
Best Adapted Screenplay – Very unlikely, but not impossible
    Best Cinematography – Very likely
Best Film Editing – Very likely
Best Original Score – Very unlikely, but not impossible
Best Original Song (Hold My Hand)- Almost a lock
Best Production Design – No way
Best Sound – Almost a lock

Right now I predict: Picture, Actor, Cinematography, Editing, Song and Sound (6 overall)

If the film surprises and is extremely well received I could see Director, S. Actor (Teller), S. Actress (Connelly) (9 overall)

Val Kilmer’s part is too short (almost a cameo) so I don’t see it.

The screenplay is not the type to get Oscar noms (See Titanic, Mad Max, etc.). So also I don’t see it.

Score is tricky since it uses a lot of the score from the original Top Gun. I don’t think it will get a nom there.

Production Design? Almost the whole film happens in real locations or inside the planes. No way in hell it gets a nom for it.

VFX is another tricky one since almost all are practical effects. But I don’t see it either here.

My doubts and your doubts seem to be opposite. I think acting noms won’t happen at the Oscar’s (Though a rogue GG or SAG nom for Cruise is possible). However, I do think it will get into VFX. Practical Effects are still respected (No Time to Die, Mad Max, and most of Christopher Nolan’s films are practical effects heavy). And even if it misses, watch out for a Special Recognition Oscar for the flight coordination.

I think a rogue Cruise GG nom actually makes sense.

Tom Cruise is not getting any love from the HFPA after he returned all of the Golden Globes that he had won in an act of boycott and escalation.

Oh shit how did I forget that.

Now you say it I’m like “of course”.

Wouldn’t the HFPA be aware of that though and not want to petty by “snubbing” him. They made sure that their nomination slate this was bulletproof (not a Music or Emily in Paris in sight).

How Tom Cruise got to be as big of a star as he is, I will never know.

I also forgot about that, but a SAG is still possible. They’ve been pretty genre friendly lately. Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley), Lupita Nyong’o (Us), and Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns & A Quiet Place) in the last couple of years.

I don’t think you can count Blanchett and Blunt here since both were in BIG OSCAR BAITS.

Little has changed in the world of Top Gun, least of all Cruise, from the burnished opening sights of planes waltzing off an aircraft carrier to the strains of Kenny Loggins’ Danger Zone. Maverick still has the jacket, the bike(s), the aviator sunglasses, and (most importantly) the “desire for speed” that made him famous in 1986. He may be testing planes in the Mojave Desert. In the opening Mach 10 sequence, which doesn’t so much nod to Philip Kaufman’s The Right Stuff as fly straight past it with a super-smug popcorn-eating grin, he also exhibits the machine-tooled rebellious streak that has kept him from progressing above the rank of captain. See you later, snobby moviegoers!

Blanchett yes but I hardly think Blunt (or any of the production teams involved) took roles in a Disney musical sequel or an April horror film expecting an Oscar nom.

I think Top Gun Maverick has a pretty good chance to get a SAG nom for Cast in a Motion Picture.

Oh yes, I agree with you there. I doubt the first thing Blunt thought while taking it was “okay, here’s my Oscar”. It’s an honour for anyone to play Mary Poppins with or without bait. I included Blunt in the mix, because while they must not have made the film wanting an Oscar, the studio campaigned it extensively for awards (which is quite natural considering the Oscar success of the 1964 version) and so did Blunt and others once the film was made. The main argument here is that Tom Cruise in Top Gun can’t be compared to Blanchett and Blunt wrt to a SAG nomination because unlike Blanchett and Blunt, Cruise’s movie is not exactly something that gets acting nominations while Blanchett starred in a big budget baity del Toro film and Blunt played a character which had previously won an Oscar and was right up the Academy’s/award bodies’ ally.

According to GoldDerby contributor Edward Douglas, Top Gun: Maverick could be in contention for as many as thirteen Oscar nominations: Best Picture Best Director (Josph Kominski) Best Actor (Tom Cruise) Best Supporting Actor (Val Kilmer) Best Supporting Actor (Miles Teller) Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Connelly) Best Adapted Screenplay Best Cinematography Best Film Editing Best Original Score Best Original Song (Hold My Hand) Best Production Design Best Sound

I sure as heck hope not for Picture, any Acting, Director or Screenplay
