Remember when some people in the threads were calling this the Best Picture winner?

I’ve forgotten this whole movie a few days after watching it. Watching the entirety of the anime Beastars after it and drinking probably didn’t help, but still.

    For Your Consideration:

    Best Picture: Wolfwalkers

    Best Animated Feature: Wolfwalkers

Not only Editing. I was also impressed by its Production Design.

Just finished the film. This is probably the best movie of 2020 by default. I see all of the criticisms against this film in this thread and I respectfully ignore them. Chicago 7 knew exactly when to use the Sorkin dialogue to maximum effect, and then as soon as Bobby Seale got bound and gagged the tone shifted, and it was deadly serious the whole way through. This was an incredible masterclass in writing and Sorkin will win his 2nd Oscar next April.

I don’t even know who the standout is. So many characters got to have so many phenomenal moments. Rylance, Cohen, Redmayne, Abdul-Mateen, and Strong are all tied for my favorite, and Langelia plays a deliciously evil villain. I still stand by my statement that no one will be nominated for an Oscar. This will be the biggest vote split in Academy history.

My only complaint was that the film dragged on just a little too long. Certain scenes could have been tightened up and others could have been removed entirely, like the one where Hoffman and his buddy confront Gordon-Levitt’s character and make his obvious character arc even more obvious. But that’s about it for critcisms.

Oh, and like I said before, if this film doesn’t win Best Film Editing I’ll start the 2nd Chicago Riot.

As someone who doesn’t say this about a whole bunch of films, I’m the opposite. I wish it was longer. With 14-ish central characters swirling around, and enough plot material to literally go on for days (the trial went on for months and Sorkin had access to the transcripts), I could see the film pushing 3-ish hours had it been done properly. Maybe 4 if it was edited into a mini-series. I don’t think enough time was used for each of the characters… kept feeling like everyone needed a little bit more room to breath and develop. When they made the fade-cut during SBC’s stand I immediately thought that was a mistake. Felt like they were just getting started with that scene.

To each their own of course— if you wished it was shorter, that’s fine– but I think it’s a story and a plot that deserved a longer time on screen than it got.

It seems very likely that Chicago 7 is winning SAG best ensemble award. This will make Michael Keaton the most decorated actor in this category with 3 wins. (Birdman, Spotlight and Chicago 7).

Is this a joke? The movie is obviously still a top contender at the Oscars, your personal opinion really doesn’t factor into that at all. The reviews, both critics and audience, are more than sufficient.

    FYC:

Best Director - Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Darius Marder (Sound of Metal)

Lead Actor - Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal)

Supporting Actor - Paul Raci (Sound of Metal)

Supporting Actress - Youn Yuh-jung (Minari)

Exactly. After the likes of Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Joker, we should all realize that just cause something isn’t liked on Gold Derby doesn’t mean that it’s the same in the industry. This is an extremely baity film and it’s likely to do well.

There was a lot to like, but as a student of this period, I feel like this was a wasted opportunity. The topics deserved more than Sorkin’s witty rapidfire repartee. It needed time to chew, process and digest. You can’t do justice to this period with a line about some massive philosophical-political issue laden with meaning, delivered rapidfire, and countered immediately with another position while your head is spinning trying to catch up. Today’s activists could learn a lot from the philosophical and educated debate which took place in the late 60s and early 70s, care of the Weather Underground (where were they in this movie??) and the Black Panthers (presented as almost cute in this movie). Activism was intellectual, well-organised, and born from the free-thinking universities and student movements, marches, congresses and sit-ins; it wasn’t viral three word soundbites and hashtags.

To turn Rubin and Hoffman into stand-up comics and clowns was egregious. Their ideas desevered weightier, more susbtantive discussion. Their ideas were in context.

The editing was good, I really liked the splicing of real footage with the protest scenes. I liked how it started by including the assassinations of King and Kennedy for context. Some of the focus on police brutality and state corruption were briefly there. But I don’t think this deserves screenplay, I don’t think the acting was all that good, and the powerless shouty courtroom fighting with the judge was just annoying. Can someone please write and direct better argument scenes in general, where you’re not silently screaming “just use your words, dickhead.”

We have so much to learn from the 60s counterculture; they were trying to set up a new society with a blank slate. Today’s neoliberal terror wasn’t even on the cards – they were throwing out hundreds of ideas about how society could be, and we need to be studying more of the options that were being presented back then, before neoliberalism/neocapitalism became the assumed truth that it is today. We don’t have to live like this, it’s just one way of living which happened to emerge triumphant, but we need to be creative again and see what other posibilities are out there that serve us better how to educate our kids better, how to connect with nature better, how to share opportunities better, how to be healthier, and how to rein in American brutality. In that regard, having 8 men on trial with such varied philopsophies and objectives, and not to really explore them, was a wasted opportunity. Imagine this in the hands of Oliver Stone.

After watching this, I don’t understand this whole “they all will split and no one will get nominated” thing.

Rylance is clearly the standout among the supporting players and his a previous Oscar winner, very respected theatre actor.

There is no way “no one will be nominated.” There are a bunch of precursors like the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, SAG Awards, and BAFTA Awards that will nominate someone from the film and this will make it more clear as to who will be nominated at the Oscars.

Dear Gold Derby, please add Ibrahima Gueye to the prediction center 🙂

I basically agree, except I am reminded of Quiz Show where John Turturro was nominated at Globes and SAG yet it was Paul Scofield who got the Oscar nod. I wonder if a similar thing could play out with Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Rylance respectively; then again, Rylance seems the type who would also be recognised at SAG.
