Inspired by Lil Tony’s Most Overrated thread, what are some performances in film that you feel were underrated, either by critics, the public, this site, the awards bodies etc.

Jesse Plemons or Billy Magnussen in Game Night (and in general)

    Josh Brolin in Avengers

    John Cho in Searching

    Jennifer Garner in Love, Simon

Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Kindergarten Teacher

Stephan James in If Beale Street Could Talk

    Elizabeth Debicki in Widows

And ofc Jonathan Pryce in The Wife

I just love movies. And awards.

    Bless you for this thread.

    Sandra Bullock, Ocean’s 8

Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born (yes I dare to put this as underrated)

    Jim Cummings, Christopher Robin

    Jamie Lee Curtis, Halloween

    Elizabeth Debicki, Widows

    Nicholas Hoult, The Favourite

    Anna Kendrick, A Simple Favor

    Jennifer Jason Leigh, Annihilation

    Blake Lively, A Simple Favor

    Ewan McGregor, Christopher Robin

Natalie Portman, Annihilation (I probably would’ve put Vox Lux too but I haven’t seen it yet so)

    Jonathan Pryce, The Wife

Tessa Thompson, Annihilation (I clearly loved this movie)

These 20 performances would have deserved to be taken much more seriously in the awards conversation:

1 Kiki Layne, If Beale Street Could Talk
2 Stephan James, If Beale Street Could Talk
    3 Rachel McAdams, Disobedience
    4 Ryan Gosling, First Man
    5 Kathryn Hahn, Private Life

6 Lakeith Stanfield, Sorry to Bother You
    7 Charlize Theron, Tully
    8 Joanna Kulig, Cold War
    9 Sakura Ando, Shoplifters
    10 Alex Wolff, Hereditary

    11 Keira Knightley, Colette
    12 Kayli Carter, Private Life
    13 Elizabeth Depicki, Widows
14 Millicent Simmonds, A Quiet Place
    15 Daniel Kaluuya, Widows

16 Armie Hammer, Sorry to Bother You
    17 Katherine Langford, Love, Simon
    18 Paul Giamatti, Private Life
    19 Jonathan Pryce, The Wife
    20 Nick Robinson, Love, Simon

(Note that I have yet to see Beautiful Boy, Boy Erased, Eighth Grade, and Ben Is Back, among others. I suspect certain performances from those films would make my list.)

Tom Cruise – Mission Impossible: Fallout – in addition to punishing his body with all those stunts and learning to fly a helicopter, he adds much gravitas to his character

Corey Stoll – First Man – would have loved to see a film focusing on the character of Buzz, who comes off as way more interesting that Neil

Nicholas Hoult -The Favourite – got overshadowed by the female performances, but he is good in this too

Letitia Wright / Danai Gurira / Angela Bassett / Lupita Nyong’o – the female performances in Black Panther are all good, but probably got overlooked because they are all in it together. At least they picked up the SAG ensemble.

Elsie Fisher – Eighth Grade – a more real performance than Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen) and Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird), both of whose dialogue and mannerisms seem written by adult screenwriters

Sandra Bullock – Bird Box – the movie works because it has a solid performance by Bullock who makes us care because her character does

Lana Condor / Noah Centineo – To All the Boys – the best romantic pairing in film this year

Jonathan Pryce – The Wife – I can’t decide if this is the most underrated performance or most overrated performance this year. His character is so on the nose despicable, that I wish he had some redeeming quality pencilled in. So, credit to Pryce for the effectiveness of his performance.

In my book, any list of underrated performances of 2018 that doesn’t include Lady Gaga for A Star is Born is invalid… Here we go…

Lady Gaga, A Star is Born

    Emily Blunt for everything

Thomasin Mckenzie in Leave no Trace

Amandla Stenberg for The Hate U Give

Ben Foster in Leave no Trace

    Nick Robbinson in Love, Simon

    John Krisiski A Quiet Place

    Ryan Gosling in First Man

Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) should win best actress

While I think a performance can no longer be considered to be underrated if it has been nominated for an Oscar, your list, excluding Gaga, is quite solid. In fact, a case can be made for each of those performers to have been nominated instead of one of the actual nominees for his year.
