OP mentioned Sean Penn in Mystic River, and I have to disagree there: Penn did better work in both Dead Man Walking and Milk (though objectively speaking, the only real-life scenario I would change is giving Mickey Rourke the win over Penn). However, I do believe Tim Robbins’ win in that film is incredibly underrated. His meek presence is the soul of the film, and hot take: it’s an overall better character acting work for Robbins than Shawshank was for him.

Another one is Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda. Comedy wins are few and far between, and while I personally preferred Michael Palin’s performance in the film, Kline still gives it his all and elevates the otherwise stupid (that’s an in-joke) character.

Joan Fontaine in Suspicion. I get that it was a make-up win for Rebecca, but she legitimately elevated what would be a low-tier Hitchcock movie every time she was on-screen, and wonderfully developed her character. Also, props to her for also compensating for Cary Grant clearly being lost in how to act in a heavy drama.

Sean Penn in Milk. Such a great against-type performance from him (MUCH better than that atrocity of I Am Sam) that gets forgotten because of the winning controversy.

    Emmys FYC: Jean Smart.
