So now that the season has started, we have an idea of what performances are on the critics/industry radar and will get nominated and win most of the awards.
But, what are some performances of this year that seem to be getting no traction at all and yet are deserving of the recognition?
ReplyDecember 20, 2020 at 1:02 am #1203933740The main cast of Babyteeth. All four of them delivered win worthy performances and it’s a shame none of them will get any traction.

I’ve been meaning to watch Babyteeth for a while but now that I’m making my year-end lists I’ll definitely be checking it out soon.

Eliza Scanlen is honestly just an incredibly underrated performer. She is the definition of versatile. Her performance in Babyteeth is a complete 180 from her performance in Sharp Objects (you hardly recognise that she’s the same person lol).
I wasn’t also a fan of Ben Mendelsohn’s work until now but he was truly heartbreaking in this. It’s tempting me to see what else he is in.

December 20, 2020 at 1:38 am #1203933770From what I’ve seen so far:
Lead performances
Radha Blank, The 40-Year-Old Version
Elisabeth Moss, Shirley
Cristin Milioti, Palm Springs
Alma Poysti, Tove
Jesse Plemons, I’m Thinking of Ending Things
Dev Patel, The Personal History of David Copperfield
Ibrahima Gueye, The Life Ahead
Pete Davidson, The King of Staten IslandSupporting perfomances
Arliss Howard, Mank
Odessa Young, Shirley
Glynn Turman, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Jonathan Majors, Da 5 Bloods
Orion Lee, First Cow
Dianne Wiest, Let Them All Talk
Lucas Hedges, Let Them All Talk
Robin de Jesus, The Boys in the Band
Miranda Hart, Emma
Dan Stevens, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire SagaAll these performances were unique in the sense that the actor brought them to a level someone else would have not. Unfortunately I expect them to be largely – and for the most part completely – snubbed by awards bodies.
I’ve left out some great performances that I expect to gain at least a few random nods here and there, such as Candice Bergen in Let Them All Talk, Jessie Buckley in I’m Thinking of Ending Things and Nicole Beharie in Miss Juneteenth.

Colman Domingo + Glynn Turman, Ma Rainey

Rahda Blank, The Forty-Year-Old Version
Abril Zamora + Sophia Loren, The Life Ahead (has she appeared yet really?)December 20, 2020 at 1:40 am #1203933775I watched Beanpole today. It should be in contention for awards across the board but the outstanding (debut!) performances of Viktoria Miroshnichenko and Vasilisa Perelygina deserve to get attention.
I’m also disappointed the film didn’t make the final cut for International Film this past ceremony because it would have boosted the visibility a lot and perhaps given it the tiniest chance of getting the major nominations it deserves this year.

And, honestly, Anthony Rannells in The Prom even though I really didn’t like this movie. He, along with Meryl, saved it from being boring and totally forgettable.
