Debra Messing was born to play Lucille Ball. Not Cate Blanchett!

Agree. It’s really not that great
But I like the idea of a female-directed movie being so highly regarded so I still support it

But I wouldn’t mind if they divided the category by gender for the sake of expanding the recognition for women. If distributors knew that female directed movies had a guaranteed spot at the Oscars they would finance them without hesitation.

I can see the argument.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 2, 2020 at 3:44 pm #1203754015I would like the Oscars to expand all of their categories by at least a little bit. Like one or two more slots. To give more room for deserving contenders.

I think there’d be (as there has been) significant pushback from female filmmakers for this. It’s essentially giving them a subset of success, not that it necessarily should be, but Director has been both sexes for all of history (even if only 5 women have been nominated) unlike the acting races which have been separated the whole time.
That said, it would definitely be a huge factor in expanding female directors’ opportunities in the industry… This would guarantee 5 different female names yearly in the conversation. Granted, you’d see names like Coppola and Gerwig rack up like 7 career nominations, but it would still be incredible to see the number of female nominees we have seen double in one year.
