The best actress lineup last year should have been:
– Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose
– Lupita Nyong’o, Us
– Florence Pugh, Midsommar
– Saoirse Ronan, Little Women
– Renee Zellweger, Judy
ScarJo’s performance was overrated and Theron (whilst she did an uncanny impression of Megyn Kelly) was in a film that seemed to be an SNL sketch trying to be a prestige drama with great actors.

I don’t even think this is unpopular but Daniel Day-Lewis should have totally won his second Oscar for Gangs of New York instead of Adrien Brody in The Pianist.October 28, 2020 at 2:13 pm #1203808279

Adrian Brody’s performance was haunting and full deserved his Oscar. Daniel’s performance, although very good, was a typical Oscar baity performance (bigger and louder).October 28, 2020 at 4:07 pm #1203808483
Literally more people talk about I, Tonya, Get Out, Lady Bird, Call Me By Your Name and Three Billboards individually more than The Shape of Water right now. I’d also like to add that Gary Oldman’s win for Darkest Hour is also forgettable. People still talk about John Lithgow’s performance as Winston Churchill they do not talk about his anymore.
The problem with Darkest Hour is that the movie is forgetable the same with LincolnOctober 28, 2020 at 4:10 pm #1203808489
Avatar wasn’t a franchise when it topped the year end list though.
But the fact that they are making sequels made me not include Avatar. To my knowledge, there was always an intent to make multiple Avatar movies, but you are right. Avatar was a non-franchise film.October 28, 2020 at 6:01 pm #1203808641
I don’t think Lincoln was forgettable at all. It’s undeniably major Oscar bait, but the performances, direction, and writing were all terrific.
I think Lincoln was too long and at the end i got bored, Daniel Day Lewis was great but the movie is not that great, the last hour was boring.October 28, 2020 at 6:18 pm #1203808660

Lincoln’s problem was the ending. It should’ve ended when he was leaving to go to the theater which would’ve wrapped it up perfectly. But then it kept going after that, and what happens while fine, isn’t as interesting when he’s DDL is no longer there. If someone made a version that goes from Lincoln heading to the theater to the credits, it would’ve made the whole movie better.October 28, 2020 at 7:07 pm #1203808700
Rocketman (2019) is worse than Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) because while the latter is badly made, it’s fun to talk about. The former was so boring and an absolute chore to watch sober.October 28, 2020 at 8:21 pm #1203808788
Unpopular opinion, but you might miss it:
Hollywood is a racist, sexist, misogynist, war-mongering, violence-promoting, child abusing, women raping, women shaming, nation-myth-propagandering industry and by fawning all over it, in these forums and consuming their products without asking questions about the sausage making, we excuse or even endorse the toxic, destructive behaviours and attitudes which affect people all over the world, especially women who learn to hate their natural bodies. Hollywood is complicit with the military industrial complex to promote America’s wars and build the nation’s myths so that all the national failings like urban decay, poor health care, poor education, bad governance, intrinsic inequality, profound violence and terrible infrastructure are glossed over by audiences who come to think the USA is somehow a glorious big wondrous exceptionally moral entity equipped to tell other countries how to act. Audiences, especially us left-leaning ones, don’t care about actual global issues or change, or how the ticket purchase price funds such a harmful industry and toxic outcomes.October 29, 2020 at 5:18 pm #1203810134

Merritt Wever and Julie Hagerty were better than Laura Dern in Marriage Story.
