Margot Robbie was robbed a nomination that year for Wolf of Wall Street. She and Lawrence played similar characters, but Robbie was actually good. Lupita and June Squibb were the only deserving actresses in that lineup.

    Talking about Arquette’s year.

Yall are way too harsh on Jennifer Lawrence. It’s not a « thing » anymore to hate her. She was good in American Hustle. Like she literally won the BAFTA and the Golden Globes and was second for the Oscar that year. Yall need to chill.

American Hustle was an extended SNL clip with some questionable wigs. To this day no one can convince otherwise. Lawrence was Razzie worthy.

Most overrated movie of the 2010s and the acting was awful. Everyone was doing the most for no reason

    That 0/10 was delightful

    FYC

Best Actress - Pénélope Cruz, Olivia Colman

    Best Actor - Denzel Washington

Best Supporting Actress - Aunjanue Ellis, Kathryn Hunter

I was disappointed after I saw American Hustle too

Never got the hype over Robbie’s performance there. She’s good, but it’s a somewhat generic nagging wife role.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a thing to do so, it’s an unpopular opinions thread. Also, her hatedom has died down since she’s been in very little of note so far, but it’s still definitely present.

2014 Best Supporting Actress lineup was the weakest lineup of all the acting categories last decade.

2014 Best Supporting Actress lineup vs 2019 Best Supporting Actor lineup, which one is weaker? This is definitely a tough one, but I might go with 2019.

not when the runner ups for 2014 on paper was between Emma Stone’s 1 scene wonder or Keira’s nothing performance but just happened to be in a stronger movie than the other 2 nominees (and I guess one category they could’ve given The Imitation Game a win if it were to lose screenplay, assuming Boyhood didn’t exist)

Leonardo Dicaprio has limited range and has never been ‘overdue’ an Oscar.

The way this shouldn’t be unpopular but sadly is.

Here’s a really unpopular take: Tenet was fine.

When a lesser-known first time nominee sweeps for a pretty subtle performance, you know there’s no competition. I’m just glad Arquette swept because Keira Knightley was an early favorite..

Oh yeah, Arnie Grape in Gilbert Grape, Howard Hughes in The Aviator, Danny Archer in Blood Diamond, Edward Daniels in Shutter Island, Calvin Candie in Django,Jay Gatsby, Jordan Belfort, Hugh Glass, Rick Dalton, and Jack Dawson, just to name a few, are the same type of characters.
    Go figure.

Yorgos Lanthimos is a visionary and has the potential to make a movie that could shape the way movies are made for years to come.

The one second of Frances McDormand screaming her son’s name in Three Billboards alone secured her the Oscar in 2018. This was the best Actress line-up in a very long time, and there was still no one to match her. She also has the acting chops to win a third Oscar in Lead very soon and would deservedly be only the second actress to do so.

Collateral should have been nominated for Best Picture. Nominating Foxx in Supporting for this film even though he wouldn’t “need” that nomination looking at the fact that he was a lock in Lead is still one of the coolest things the Academy has ever done.

Speaking of cool, bring back the acting nominations for genre performances outside of occasional comedic/musical roles. I feel like something along the lines of Sir Ian McKellen in Lord of the Rings or Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Carribean could not happen today, and that’s a shame. Joaquin Phoenix was a step in the right direction, but Joker was sold more as a prestige drama than a comic book adaptation so it was still one of the safer picks they could have made. Aside from Daniel Kaluuya I can’t think of a performance in a straight-up genre movie (that’s no comedy or musical) that was nominated in the last few years. What about Blunt, Collette, Jackman?

most artists are overrated and underrated at some point in their careers. I would say especially in this day and age.

not negating your opinion though, you have every right to have it.

Adam Driver’s SNL performances showed me that he is an extremely talented actor. Lots of range.
