I’m probably missing something obvious but can’t understand what was so Oscar worthy about Mark Rylance…he looked vaguely confused and bored that whole movie, a nomination would have been generous enough.

It’s just that he’s the best actor in a hyped movie, once you realise how bad all the others are.

Lion deserved Best Picture I love Mahershala Ali but it really should have been Dev Patel

Dev Patel deserves the world, partly because in Lion, he became the first and only non-Australian in the history of the universe to do an Australian accent properly.

I didn’t really like Brenda Blethyn in Secrets & Lies. The performance was very good but I couldn’t bear her voice and the way she said « sweetheart ». Jean-Baptiste, with Spall as a close 2nd, is the MVP in this for me.

Cherry is a good movie. The same critics who thought nomadland was the greatest thing since sliced bread for being meandering now attack cherry for doing the same.

Jean Dujardin didn’t deserve his Oscar and his nomination. The Artist was loved only because it showed old Hollywood. Brad Pitt in Moneyball was way more deserving.

Besides Promising Young Woman and Nomadland, the movies that are leading the awards circuit are pretty boring movies: The Trial of Chicago 7 (has great dialogues, but the movie doesn’t go anywhere), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (my expectations were way specially because of Fences but the performances are great), One Night in Miami (meh).
Haven’t seen Minari and The Father (but I hope that they’re better movies).

FYC TV: Stateless | We Are Who We Are | Cate Blanchett in Stateless | Paapa Essiedu in I May Destroy You

FYC Movie: Boys In The Band | Toni Collette in I’m Thinking Of Ending Things | Jim Parsons in The Boys In The Band | Shailene Woodley in Endings, Beginnings | Zoey Deutch in Buffaloed | Sebastian Stan in Endings, Beginnings

Eighth Grade is a piece of shit film and didn’t deserve any of the acclaim it got. Americans really suck at portraying stories about teenagers.

I haven’t seen The Father yet because I don’t enjoy watching movies that are total bummers, but Minari is superb and it’s gone straight into my top 3 with Nomadland and PYW. You’re right about the rest. Time to move onto the non-English language and documentary categories, they’re usually more interesting and inspiring anyway. I’m done with the features. Like, who’s watching Jared Leto in that cop movie just to see why he’s been nominated? Not me.

It took me only a few movies from other years that I hadn’t watched before to realize that 2020 really is boring when it comes to movies.

Also I’m quite sick of biopics, they’re over-rewarded and I’d much rather see people winning awards for playing fictional characters because in a way it also rewards the writers of a movie for thinking of a new, interesting character. Not saying biopics can’t be interesting but personally I rather watch a documentary than seeing a fictionalized version of someone’s life.

I honestly don’t think I can survive another season. Just the thought of it…

Not really unpopular I think but I hate the way Liv Ullmann’s interviews only revolve around Ingrid Bergman and/or Ingmar Bergman. To me, she’s the best actress of all time and yet interviews so often only focus on her relationship with Ingmar Bergman or her admiration for Ingrid. I’m not saying these aren’t interesting topics of discussion but when your talking to one of the most influential actresses ever, you have to level up.

Although she is an Emmy legend, I think Alfre Woodard is the most underappreciated actress in film. I truly wish she’d get that push that Glenn is currently getting or Meryl.

I’m getting tired of these biopics myself.

The Godfather Part II was good but kind of boring. And De Niro wasn’t that good in it.

Americans can sometimes be great with the accent work playing Brits but they are absolutely awful when it comes to capturing the mannerisms. The only time in which I’ve seen an American succeed playing a Brit in capturing mannerisms was when Renee Zellweger played Bridget Jones.

FYC Emmys: "The Crown" in all categories, "I May Destroy You" in all categories, "It's a Sin" in all categories, "Small Axe" in all categories, Billie Piper ("I Hate Suzie"), Yvonne Strahovski ("Stateless") and Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials")
