Although she is an Emmy legend, I think Alfre Woodard is the most underappreciated actress in film. I truly wish she’d get that push that Glenn is currently getting or Meryl.

    The church said amen.

Americans are absolutely rubbish at non-American accents. Zellweger of course aside, and I’ll throw in Paltrow in Sliding Doors. But I can’t think of many others, other than where the person grew up in that language/accent background (like Yeun in Minari, or e.g. Latina actresses or Jewish actors doing accents from their upbringing). But Daveed Diggs’ overbaked Lafayette or DiCaprio murdering a Saffer accent in Blood Diamond or Kate Mulgrew in OITNB? Dick van Dyke? Pacino in The Local Stigmatic? I mean.

Fanning gets a pass in The Great, maybe Stone in The Favourite, but you don’t get too many points for doing a passable version of the only two standard British accents known by Americans – RP/posh London, and hyper-cockney.

    Is this an unpopular opinion?

Anyway, in the converse, I can usually tell when a non-American takes on an “American” accent and I’m usually not impressed.

Frances McDormand was amazing in Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri and deserved her Oscar.

People are unnecessarily concerned with accent work when it comes to performances There are plenty of performances that are underrated (and overrated) because of this fixation with something that I believe is largely trivial in most cases.

This. Doing accent work isn’t part of “acting” IMO. Like, I am never bothered by Nicole Kidman’s accent because her brilliant acting work towers over it.

I can’t recall the interview or the precise words, but Meryl Streep was once asked about being complimented for doing a good accent in a performance, and she responded something like : “It’s like looking at a beautiful woman and saying ‘nice feet'”.

A good delivery of an accent doesn’t make a great performance.

Exactly. To me, it’s the same thing like actors not doing their own singing — it doesn’t matter! If they aren’t professional singers and/or don’t thrive in that area, why should they do it? If they can still embody the character and have the music flow through their veins, then why is lip-syncing — unless it’s downright awful — held against them?

No he overbaked it and went to hard on rolling his Rs for one thing. Do you know any white/Afrikaans Southern Africans?

I do think that accents are crucial. A bad accent will take me way out of the credible range of the performance. When Kidman goes in and out of her characters, I definitely notice, but there’s nothing in her characters which says she’s not e.g. an Australian-American. Whereas Blood Diamond required something georgraphically specific.
