I rewatched Gone Girl again on the plane, and I was finally able to truly analyze Rosamund Pike’s performance. My first reaction was that the writing paved the way for her performance. I take that back. Rosamund by far has the best nominated/winning performance of this decade for an actress. I understand why Julianne Moore won, but Pike was simply breathtaking. There was a change of mind due to the holes within the story (the film not the book). It seems easier to play the insane role comparing to the ‘girl next door’ role, but the fact that she executed both roles was groundbreaking. I feel like any other actress would have focused on being “crazy” more than the entire character as a whole. The fact that I felt like Nick was the main villain goes beyond the writing. It was her performance.

Don’t know what this is doing here but agree 100%.

Call Me By Your Name isn’t that good and Armie Hammer is actually awful in it.

When it comes to nominations and wins, the Emmy’s are 10x worst than the Oscars.

Quentin Tarantino is unnecessarily scrutinized for violence in movies because his movies are seen on such wide range.Violence in his movies is necessary to plot most of the times.

Guys like Lars Von Trier and Nicolas Winding Refn actually fetishize violence and violence in their movies is over the top and seems as they have made to look “Hey how fucked up is that?”.See 2 movies for instance.

Thank you. Quentin loves injecting violence into all of his films, but they’re never gratuitous. And in his recent ones they were fantasy cathartic.
I don’t fully agree with you ‘re Refn, but if that isn’t self stroking fetishism from von Trier then nothing is. He long ago became repellent for me.

I love Winding Refn and I actually love all of his movies with Drive being one of my all time favorite but he has said it himself that violence is his fetish.

I think that is visible in “Only God Forgives” especially when Chang tortures a person.

Lars Von Trier is a masterful director but lately he has been focusing more on disturbing his audience than making a movie.I saw “House That Jack Built” with so much anticipation but I fainted midway. It was just so much and just so unnecessary.Maybe I’m not old enough..

His early films were genius, but for me he’s devolved into a director who doesn’t care about his audience and expects us to keep considering him the best one around when I don’t see any evidence of that on the screen.

I can’t handle torture of any kind which is why I fast forward that Refn film you mention. I didn’t know Refn said that about himself.

Any Scottish role not performed by a Scottish actor should be played by Julie Walters, she’s the only mainstream actor who is actually convincing with her accent work.

I think all roles ever should just be played by Julie Walters from now on

Tarantino fetishizes violence too. From Kill Bill till today he is the rep he initially earned in the 90s for violence in his movies. Whereas Dogs and Fiction felt wholly justified in their bloodshed. Now everything is a relentless gore fest.

    Tarantino fetishizes “Dirty Feets”.

    Whole another sick thing.
