Tom Hanks should have been nominated in Captain Phillips and The Post.

Call Me by Your Name review from Sally Jane Black

Interesting take on the Call Me by Your Name discourse.

I have to say that I agree, by the way. Although problematic (or even problematic-adjacent) relationships are a dime a dozen in the queer community, especially among gay men, that does not absolve their portrayals of necessary nuance. Ivory may have tried to be “faithful” to the source material, but it was well within his power to contextualize the central relationship critically. He failed to do so, rendering the screenplay largely ugly.

Would it? Dirty Dancing, The Reader and even Tangled have bigger age gaps than CMBYN but I don’t see anyone labelling the central relationship in those films as creepy or pedophilic. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that such things become a bigger point of discussion and scrutiny when a homosexual relationship is involved.

Let’s be fair. Armie Hammer in the movie was an adult and Timothee was a teenager and wasn’t even of legal age. I don’t think I ever saw The Reader because of its negative reception so I can’t comment on that one there, and while Rapunzel was 18 in the movie, we don’t know what Flynn Rider’s age was. It’s entirely possible that his age was that similar to Rap’s (namely 19 or 20). Maybe they revealed his age in the series, I will admit that I have yet to watch most of Season 2 of the series so maybe they revealed it then, but I think the most important aspect that I was trying to say is that Rapunzel, unlike Elio, was of age and if, heaven forbid, Rapunzel and Flynn did fuck hypothetically then he would not be arrested for pedophilia whereas Armie would because Elio is a minor and Rapunzel is not. Armie in the movie was 7 years older than Elio, so the age gap is a lot more noticeable.

If you have a sexual relationship with a person, male or female, who is below the age of 18 while you yourself are above the age of 18, then you are a pedophile. You are not magically not a pedophile when the relationship is homosexual. Gays are not above the law.

I would argue that most people defend this film because it’s an LGBT-related film whereas if the movie was exactly the same in every way but it was a hetero relationship as opposed to an LGBT relationship, people would call it pedophilic, but I have gotten enough flak and hatred for my opinions in the past so I will shut up. Clearly CMBYN is the one movie you can’t touch and can’t ever criticize or else you are banished for life. Even I am not that way about Toy Story.

I have said it again but it will fall on deaf ears, I have liked and enjoyed LGBT-related films and performances in the past, including some that have won my Tyler’s Choice Awards, and I ultimately don’t really care about another person’s sexual identity in the long run, and I am annoyed that people seem to defend LGBT-related films more than regular films (even if regular films stans) and I still standby my claim that GoldDerby has a bunch of SJWs on it (not necessarily a bad thing because SJW is not inherently a insult), but I do not classify myself as a homophobe because I don’t hate anyone. I have friends on social media who are LGBT and I love them just the same as my regular friends. I just happen to think that one movie that someone happen to make in the stream of time isn’t the greatest movie of all-time while still admitting that it was good in comparison to the absolute worst films humanity has made.

    And cue backlash in 3… 2… 1…

I am done with talking about this. But I will post another unpopular opinion.

If we are being fair? You are not being fair at all by giving a twist to the discussion. No one, not even a single person is defending or criticizing any straight or LGBT film related to pedophilia.Your original post was this:

This may just be the mother of all unpopular opinions here…

I think that some LGBT-related films are loved solely for the fact that they feature LGBT characters and situations and not for the quality of the actual film.

And it had nothing to do with pedophilia, it didn’t even have anything to do with the film I’m quoting you about.I asked you for at least five examples that could back your “unpopular” opinion back, but you decided to ignore that. Why is that? You can’t think of them? Is that why you decided to make us all look like disgusting persons that support pedophilia and that believe that us, gays, are above the law?.Let me remind you that we are definitely NOT above the law, we are still far from it in some countries actually, and that’s because of people like you.

My darling, you can keep on writing as many paragraphs as you want, but you will still be fucking wrong and making it even worse which amazes me.

Natalie Portman is a ‘little’ overrated.

Actual unpopular opinion, Lucas Hedges >> Timothée Chalamet

While we’re here, Internet’s white boys of the months

I said I was done. I said that some people… I repeat SOME PEOPLE, not neccessarily the general populist, not the people on GoldDerby, not even the audience of people who watch LGBT films, but some people can act that way.

It’s just an inherent bias. I have seen on social media many posts of “I like [so-and-so] now that they are an LGBT character” which I never understood because we should judge characters on their actions and not on their sexual identity. It makes no sense.

I would argue that Call Me by Your Name is among the five. Much like Frozen, I liked the movie but the overhyping of the film turned me off of it. It was a solid 7 out of 10. Though I honestly haven’t seen enough LGBT-related films to compile a list like that. Maybe Rocketman, though I liked that movie too. It’s really just a list of movies that I liked but were overhyped. Quit harping on the stupid list please.

We need to move on. I would never call them that word that begins with the sixth letter of the alphabet because I would NEVER call them that. That’s gross. That’s disgusting. All I said is that out of the 7 billion+ people that are on this planet, some of them tend to regard LGBT films as superior to “traditional” films because of the fact that they have LGBT characters in them. That’s it. It’s not homophobic at all, it’s something that I have seen myself from social media.

I don’t want to talk about this anymore because you are just beating a dead horse. But of course you guys will think I am homophobic because GoldDerby is full of SJWs (which is not inherently a bad thing nor an insult because it’s commendable and even sometimes good to fight for social justice).

I'm not perfect, but I keep trying.

Freddie Highmore is untalented and uncharismatic. He got lucky as a child and has been wasting every opportunity he’s been given ever since.

Sidenote: the age of consent in Italy is 14. Elio is 17. It’s not pedophilia.

No he’s doing very good. I won’t take that away from him but he got where he was because he was a decent child actor. His acting never improved so now he’s an adult actor with limited talent who is famous enough to have opportunities thrown at him.
