I didn’t like Saoirse Ronan’s acting in Lady Bird as much as majority did.

Rent got way too much hate, it was a perfectly fine adaptation.

I think part of the reason why it got that hate was because many people seem to think that Rent hasn’t aged all that well, with the show itself receiving backlash as well.

I can cut Rent some slack, but I’ve always found the character of Maureen to be horribly unbearable in every way. She’s an unlikable and completely dated stereotype, and her big solo is terrible.

Hugh Jackman should’ve been nominated for Logan. I’m actually surprised that Patrick Stewart (deservedly) got in at Critics Choice and on this site but Jackman couldn’t since Jackman’s category definitely felt more empty. Now that I think about it, Dafne Keen wouldn’t have been a bad nominee either. However if I could choose just one performance to nominate from Logan, it would be Stewart.

Jackman isn’t too popular here. Anytime he’s nominated or in the mix there’s more critism than well wishes.
I thought he was great in Kate and Leopold. And I’m a fan of Liev Schreiber.
Logan depressed me but Jackman was great.

Rent is a play that it seems everyone hates nowadays. And their are good reasons. I think people are found of it mainly because it has a great soundtrack.

But characters whining about not paying Rent is thoroughly unbearable. Also the characters are pretty horrible people in hindsight, one brags about killing a dog.

Lindsay Ellis has a great video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0qfFbtIj5w

Agreed. The music is great, but it’s very easy to find its main characters annoying and pretentious for several reasons. And its never sat well with me how the character who the audience is supposed to find the most likable straight up murders a dog.

This is a semi-ripoff of something said in another thread today but just to expand:

Even if you nail the looks/mannerisms/voice etc of a real person in a biopic, it does not inherently mean it’s a good performance.

My heart is full of joy since someone put in words what I was feeling for so long

Logan was okay, I don’t know if this is verging on filmbro for GD standards but I thought he deserved a nomination for Prisoners. Gyllenhaal as well

The first is sacrilege, the latter that you’re genius.

I kind of resent the fact that Netflix’s approach to getting that Best Picture Oscar they are so thirsty for is just bankrolling established directors instead of discovering new talent and giving them that chance. Netflix has the money and ambition that they could have the next “The Matrix” level revolution on what cinema is and how it is made. This isn’t me saying that Netflix’s awards movies are bad, but that Netflix could be pushing the industry forward instead of artistic stalling.

Roma was a boring overproduced mess, that only deserved to be nominated for Cinematography. It didn’t deserve the win there either, Cold War did it way better.

People often debate on whether Inception or Social Network deserved to win Best Original Score until this day but in my opinion How To Train Your Dragon deserved it more than those two.
