Scorcese is not a great director in working with FX. Hugo had good source material, but the film just looked super artificial and detached from both reality and fantasy. It’s too grounded to be some surreal world, yet it’s too much artifice to have any weight. The Irishman’s ugly grey lighting in a lot of shots and not-at-all-convincing de-aging further compound this, as well as some of the FX heavy scenes in Wolf of Wall Street (the boat in a storm scene just felt off visually).

    My Favourite Albums

    Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides - SOPHIE

Hounds of Love - Kate Bush

Since I Left You - The Avalanches

Twin Fantasy - Car Seat Headrest

    Vespertine - Bjork

I usually think she’s great, but Helena Bonham Carter’s performance in Sweeney Todd is truly awful. She can’t sing. Even though they tried to alter her singing during production (she admitted this) her voice still sounds horribly soft and grating. While Johnny Depp’s singing is also quite dreadful, he at least tries very hard to act through it. Bonham Carter just felt so lifeless. Listening to their take on Sondheim’s masterpiece in comparison to Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury on the original album (and in a poorly shot recording of the original production) is like night and day. Burton really butchered that score.

Is the opinion “Black Narcissus should have won all the awards in 1947″ a unpopular opinion or just simple fact.

Also Kurosawa not winning Best Director for Ran is a damn shame.

Speaking of Ran, Mieka Harada should have been in competition for Best Supporting Actress that year (which was already stacked with outstanding performances from Oprah, Angelica, and Margaret).

I always cringe when I see Tarantino getting all the flack for his obsession with the n word and poor treatment of women when Scorsese is right there and just as bad

Under the Skin is boring and meandering and I hate it.

I also thought Yi Yi was the equivalent of watching paint dry. I do not get why that film is supposed to be a must see classic.

RAN always makes my list of favorite films of all time.
And the cast is more “western-accessible” in style, which is surprising. Glad it won BAFTA, LAFCA, NYFCA, and so on.

I give the Oscar to Mieko Harada.

I have rewatched Bad Teacher for the hundredth time and decided Cammy should have won GG and been nominated for the big O. I consider 2011 to be one of the strongest years for leading actress (not the actual line-up which was atrocious) and she’s always made my TOP10 but decided to move her up to TOP5. Her performance is just one of a kind. No other actress could play Elizabeth Halsey as good as she did.

The “New Tits” jar is such a gift of life. And that Annie wig.

My unpopular opinion is that The last great year for female performances, there were so many, was indeed 2011. Since then it’s been just meh with just a few great ones for Hollywood

Mila Kunis deserves to be an Oscar nominee. I would even dare to say an Oscar winner. Her performance on Black Swan was highly overlooked.

Kunis deserved a nomination for Black Swan for sure. Barbara Hershey deserved an Oscar for her terrifying performance as Nina’s mother.
