Emily Watson was the MVP of Gosford Park.

March 19, 2023 at 11:50 am #1205357167Gone Girl and Mank are David Fincher’s best films. I think these last two movies of his were an artistic peak that he won’t match in future projects. The Social Network is overrated af, as are Zodiac and Seven.
Speaking of Rosamund Pike, there is a lot of appreciation for her performance in Gone Girl, but in my opinion not for the right reasons and not enough. Some people applaud the performance for its entertainment value, others for the great transformation the character undergoes and how convincing Pike is at both times, others for being a female lead character who acts as the film’s villain… Like, throw it all out the window, it’s one of those performances that transcends technical levels of acting, a movie star turn like you don’t see nowadays, because what anchors the entire success of the film is Pike, her presence, her magnetism, the danger she brings to the character, the style she delivers in this transformation, which could be quite phony in the hands of an actress of lesser expertise. The coldness she conveys before the movie’s turning point and how it all loops back to her final scenes that are honestly chilling. Some people try to paint this performance as overrated but it just shows their lack of taste, one of the best Best Actress nominated performances of all time.March 19, 2023 at 12:01 pm #1205357172Some people try to paint this performance as overrated but it just shows their lack of taste, one of the best Best Actress nominated performances of all time.
I see this thread has changed to popular opinions 😉
March 19, 2023 at 12:03 pm #1205357174The status quo is fine, but there is a lot of talk of genderless acting categories. If that were to be done, the lead and supporting categories should be split into two: Original (Lead or Supporting) Performance and Adapted (Lead or Supporting) Performance — a la the screenplay categories, but with films based on true stories falling into the latter category as well. It would ensure original characters would be recognized and biopic performances wouldn’t always steal their thunder; plus, it isn’t entirely arbitrary since the distinction between the two is already seen in another branch’s awards.

Can you read? “Speaking of Rosamund Pike, there is a lot of appreciation for her performance in Gone Girl, but in my opinion not for the right reasons.”
The opinion that is unpopular is that Gone Girl and Mank are Fincher’s superior works. I start the second paragraph explicitly by saying that Pike’s performance is appreciated. I just decided to write an addendum about a performance that I think is amazing.
March 19, 2023 at 12:21 pm #1205357179Rebecca Hall should have been nominated for SA for The Town. She is the best part of that (great) film.
Sean Penn and Marcia Gay Harden were fantastic in Mystic River.

I would have definitely nominated her for an Oscar in Supporting for this…not to mention Whoopi deserved too…

Babe, while I love the nominations of Mirren and Smith (especially the former) Watson should have been more in the conversation and made the trio that year (if the Godfather can, then…)…

And it’s such a shame as well because if she got an Oscar nod she’d have nominations from all three of the “triple crown” bodies and I’m not sure if she’ll ever get a role like that again.
