one of the worst movies of 2022. I was shocked when I came online to see the kind of praise it was getting. Terrible
Exactly. I suppose Hollywood lied to themselves because the movie is from India
December 26, 2022 at 9:48 am #1205209942Julia Roberts was so overrated during her prime and one of the rudest celebrities in hollywood history Sandra Bullock >> Julia Roberts
I agree. She was very beautiful in Pretty Woman but she was Too Overrated In General. Sandra Bullock is Better than her

I see a lot of people treating West Side Story as the crown jewel of Spielberg’s recent filmography and being snobbish about The Fabelmans. I don’t know if it’s a lack of good taste or not knowing how to objectively judge the merits of a film, but it doesn’t make any sense. West Side Story’s story is thin and re-used from a classic in an unimaginative way, the characters are mostly unconvincing and poorly developed (these characters do not receive any favors from some strained performances, as is the case with leads Zegler and Elgort). The material works much better as a theater piece as its greatest strength is based on the grandeur of the spectacle and the energy created with live performances. The 1961 film version of West Side Story brings this show to life in a much more vivid way as one of its main elements, the choreography, is achieved flawlessly even without such competent dancers. Spielberg’s version fails to create tension and is an embellished static from beginning to end, where aesthetics carry a simplistic and non-engaging material on its back. The production design and editing mistakes in a film that relies on visuals are too careless. And the decision to move I Feel Pretty after the gang fight is a bad decision on so many levels and stops the entire narrative flow for nothing.
The Fabelmans, while far from a perfect film, has stronger merits. The entire cast’s performances are much stronger, Paul Dano and Michelle Williams especially, both of whom deliver lively performances (don’t be put off by these people who keep insisting it’s “ham” and that Williams deserves a razzie, they are an echo chamber who would say that of some of the greatest performances ever given if they came out today, without even being able to explain why). The period reconstruction is done so carefully in this film and it’s mixed with the cinematography in a very stunning way, it reminded me of the fantasy-like atmosphere of The Shape of Water. The script and editing lack conciseness, but are nonetheless engagingly and elegantly done. John Williams’ score is not a musical revolution landmark, but it brings a class and demarcation to the emotional aspect of the film that works very well. And most importantly, the story is told with intent, it’s not Spielberg working for the sake of working. The Fabelmans for me is a solid 8.5 while West Side Story is a 7. But that’s just my opinion clearly, I know many disagree but I can’t take seriously the attitude that some have towards these two movies.January 9, 2023 at 4:01 am #1205228035The Fabelmans is a better film than West Side Story. If we want to take it further Ariana debose did not deserved to win that Oscar. Ruth negga and Ann dowd were hands down the two best supporting actresses performances of that year and they weren’t’t even nominated. Im baffled by the critical acclaimed depose gotten sorry not sorry

I like her win. I think she was by far the most charismatic aspect of the film, and the one that brought the most presence. I agree that Ruth Negga had a better performance but it’s not always about the performance, as we all know. And also cause she’s black and latina, it’s great to see someone different being recognized, even if it’s for the only character that the Academy thinks a latina deserves to be recognized for. And I like that it’s a best supporting performance in the truest sense of the word, she steals every scene she’s on screen. But I understand your opinion.

she is not latina

She described herself in her Oscar winning speech as an afro-latina. I think we’re past the point of questioning the identity of others. I’ve never lived in Latin America either, nor do I have the characteristic mixed-race Latin look (I’m very white and DeBose is clearly very black), I also don’t speak the language perfectly (in DeBose’s case it would be Spanish, in my Portuguese), I didn’t grow up with the culture around me all the time, but nonetheless my mother is Brazilian and her father is Puerto Rican. Trying to gatekeep that is pretty silly.
And having lived in the US for a significant amount of time, I can say that this is something important for most people. Beyond identity, it’s a form of community for people who are often turned away from opportunities by reason of some accent or appearance or whatever.January 9, 2023 at 8:41 am #1205228425The Fabelmans is a better film than West Side Story. I disagree. But I enjoyed reading that. You could be right about one thing: The Fabelmans has intent. I didn’t like The Fabelmans at all but, at least, Spielberg was trying. West Side Story was an awful movie and an inferior and lazy remake

The acting is too camp. The actors could not sell the accent.
The story is just so uninspired.
I can’t understand the hype and all the nominations.January 19, 2023 at 6:33 am #1205253054Martin McDonagh is almost as great of a director as he is a writer, and the only reason he isn’t is that he might be the best screenwriter alive.

The Irish actors couldn’t sell the Irish accent?
Feel free to dislike the movie, but that’s an… interesting take.

Well they don’t have such a heavy accent in their everyday lives. So I may have explained myself badly but I what I meant to say was that it was too obvious that they were overdoing the accent.
January 19, 2023 at 6:40 am #1205253072Well since it’s on the first page, I don’t understand why someone can be double nominated in every category except the acting categories. I wouldn’t prefer it, but the current rule sometimes leads to the trickery we see with Lead/Supporting campaigns.
