Agreed. I’ve never understood the hype. He’s made 2 great films and the rest are mediocre. Inherent Vice and Phantom Thread were just chores to sit through. The Master isn’t the masterpiece people claim it is either. PTA is an actors director, through and through, and serves us great acting performances, but his films overall? Yeah, no.

Gawd I wish you’d go away and not come back under a 100th identity
    Is that an unpopular opinion?

    The Sunne in Splendour.

Not to mention it’s also unfair to all of the rest of categories, since it gives more chances of winning an award to one type of film professionals (4x) compared to all of the others in a completely arbitrary, biased way.

This is incorrect. There is almost only ever one director, one cinematographer, one editor, one composer… There are ALWAYS multiple actors. So using your logic about opportunity to win by profession, it would be unfair to have LESS acting categories. Otherwise, I am fine with the sentiment (although I’m also fine with how it is now — I just drc).

Once there was only Dark. If you ask me, the Light's winning.

I’ve never seen any comparisons to other directors. PTA has his own style. I’ve been watching his movies close to the beginning and you can always tell it’s him helming. He often has the same cast working with him because they LIKE to and he has a marvelous way of getting his actors nominated.

He does, and I totally respect that! He has a style to his films that is definably his. I guess I don’t find it especially compelling when there are a number of “auteur”-ish directors who similarly have a distinct style and perspective but aren’t elevated to nearly the same heights in terms of name pedigree?

Like, he had one inarguably great contribution for me. I guess I’m just complaining that his name now comes with a level of prestige/pedigree un-afforded to directors I find have more consistent, interesting work, nevermind the whole constant comparison to the all-timers thing.

Like I said, really don’t dislike his work at all and will always see his films.

I think PTA is Overrated. But only in Cinephiles Circles and Critics Circles. The General Public don’t know who PTA is. PTA had some financial problems in the last 20 years(he said it himself) and that’s why he is now trying to work with The Biggest Movie Stars Worldwide: Leonardo DiCaprio and Denzel Washington

Has anybody noticed that the 2004 time travel movie with Ashton Kutcher called The Butterfly Effect has kind of become a cult classic?

I find it fascinating that it has a pretty dismal critics reception (34% on Rotten Tomatoes; 30% on Metacritic), but has grown to having a 7.7/10 on IMDb (and check out how high the audience score is on RT, damn.)

It’s a millennial classic, if you talk to the general public about it, they generally express love for it. It’s reputation helped it get a few direct to video sequels back in the 2000s.

I think it’s a pretty bad movie, myself, and absolutely horribly written (and Kutcher is baaaad), but I’m always baffled when I remember how adored it has become over the years. People really love this movie.

I like that movie a lot. Not for the acting or the writing(both awful). But the concept and the perfect ending. The General Public only remembers the openning and ending scenes of all movies. Alfred Hitchcock said: “The most important scenes in any movie is the openning and the ending”

Happy people enjoy it, just definitely developed into one of my unpopular opinions. I always enjoy seeing what films change reception with time.

The Greatest Showman is another case like that. Critics totally killed that movie. But The General Public totally adores The Greatest Showman. It’s the most beloved musical by The General Public in the last 10 years. The other day I saw a very famous boxer training with The Greatest Showman Soundtrack

Yeah, I do think my reaction is to the somewhat insular crowd of “film” people who pedestal him, not the general public. I’m just in that echo chamber to be annoyed by it.

Bryan Tyree Henry is overhyped for Causeway- Jennifer Lawrence gave the better performance in that film.

The Banshees goes from boring to gory, and it doesn’t deserve any awards.

Am I the only one who didn’t understand Aftersun until I wikipedia’d it?

I thought maybe he has a terminal disease or the kid is dying and he wants to make her last days happy. I sat there all the way to the end lost as hell. And she said she hasnt seen the dad since that vacation so I thought for sure he died.

Lol. Only when I Wikipedia’d it did everything make sense.

I just love movies. And awards.
