Gerwig stans are worse than the Chalamet stans. Glad she lost.

How would you describe a good direction? I honestly don’t think it’s much different than Best Picture. I liked everything in Little Women more than in Lady Bird; acting, screenplay, production, story, pacing, cinematography.

Are you asking me what to look for when thinking about directing?

I like to break it into two different categories. The first is the film’s overall unity/concept/vision. The director is really responsible for tying this together.

The second is guiding the actors through their moment-to-moment acting work. Take, for example, the scene in Blue Jasmine in which Cate confronts Alec Baldwin about his affairs. Alec seems to be unmoved, nonchalant, unsurprised by her behavior…What this tells us is that his character is not in love with Jasmine and probably hasn’t been for awhile. He seems more than ready to leave her without any sort of qualms. Why is this? Well, because Jasmine struggles to make genuine connection with people, has a lot of social anxiety, and is honestly kind of stunted developmentally in that emotional regard. So a good director would help guide Alec to be aware of these things. With “worse” direction (I don’t like to define things by “good” or “bad” but you get what I mean), Alec could’ve played the scene demonstrating a lot more care for Jasmine personally. He treats her objectively, almost like a parent would care for a kid who has had their third nightmare of the night. A good director might offer analogies like this that are doable, you can play “a parent caring for a kid who has had their third nightmare of the night” because we know what that looks like. So in a nutshell, the director is responsible for clarifying each moment in order to tell the story more effectively. I think Gerwig did a “better” job doing this in Lady Bird than in Little Women.

Edit: I can’t find the scene on YouTube, but the movie is on Netflix. These are things I see/look for when I watch movies/plays.

Parasite did not deserve Best Picture.

    Be steady, my heart.

Michael Fassbender deserved to be nominated and win Best Actor Oscar in year 2011.

He gave a deep, difficult and layered performance in Shame 2011 which was a brilliant film on it’s own.

I have two friends who were adamant on Oscar night that The Lighthouse deserved to win Best Cinematography more than 1917. What are your guys’ opinions on this?

Personally I completely disagree. Not only did 1917’s Cinematography look stunning (especially in the Night Window sequence and the finale) but the sheer amount of effort it took to make the whole thing look like one shot is mind-blowing. The Lighthouse’s cinematography is great too, but this was the one award 1917 was always winning: and in my opinion deservedly so.

    Academy-Award winners:

Parasite: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay

Joker: Best Actor - Joaquin Phoenix

    Jojo Rabbit: Best Adapted Screenplay

I found all the frames rather underwhelming, there were certainly standout shots since it’s deakins, but those shots felt like screams of “take a look at me you bastard”, the lighthouse can feel gimmicky as well but at least the shots were consistently intriguing

Yeah some parts were very “point and shoot”. Some people say the one take aproach enhances the cinematography. That is true. But it also hurts it, because they didn’t put the same care into every moment of the movie.

in Blue Jasmine Sally Hawkins character (Ginger) is also unlikable but not to the extent as Jasmine. She literally goes back to Chili because the  guy she was fucking turned out to have a wife. Also would have liked her to have won that year.

Is this unpopular? They kind of all suck, and that’s kind of the point. It’s also the point that Jasmine is deluded about her status (elevating it) and Ginger is deluded about her status (thinking she doesn’t deserve anything good, the opposite of Jasmine).

Having a bigger, flashier production doesn’t automatically make it the better film. It was no different from the thousands of cliché-ridden Hollywood love stories we were fed with for decades

Glad the Academy made the right call by sinking that overrated musical

La La Land was similar to going to a restaurant that you heard rave reviews about their food and overall experience and when you get there – you experience poor service, overpriced and tasteless food – quite the disappointment.

I’d argue La La Land is more like a really popular pizza place. It’s not exactly breaking new ground, but it still gives you what you wanted and when you realize that, you can be satisfied with it.

Bombshell was a boring safe choice to win the Makeup Oscar. Joker should’ve won. In the latter case, less proved to be more.

I’d go even further: Joker’s makeup will go on history as iconic and be remembered forever, while Bombshell’s makeup will be forgotten next year.

That’s not to say Bombshell’s makeup wasn’t impressive, because it was. But you’re right, Joker will leave a longer lasting impression for many reasons.

I think a good makeup designer is kind of like a good stage manager. They say of stage managers that one is good when the audience doesn’t recognize they were even there. Bombshell fits this bill.
