I’m sad that I even have to preface this. But I do love Joaquin Phoenix as an actor. I think his willingness to work with a wealth of scripts in a variety of genres over his career makes him not only the most versatile actor of the 21st century, but one of the best in general.

That being said, it is likely Phoenix will win an Oscar for his work in Joker. I’m of the opinion he should just throw one of the other potential nominees a bone and when the Oscar noms come out, avoid campaigning like the plague. His performance isn’t his best work at all. It’s physical like all of Phoenix’ best work, but unlike his best physical performances, there isn’t a lot of range to his work nor there is a belief in the audience that he really IS the insane clown he plays. That’s something that you experience in The Master for example; that belief he is his former Navy sailor who is damaged beyond belief.

You realise that he is not campaigning at all? And it’s highly unlikley that it changes becouse A) he doesn’t want to B) he is filming movie right now.

But beside that what a flat out ridiculous statement and request.

Yeah you are right in the fact that he isn’t campaigning. I like that about Phoenix. He doesn’t give a shit.

I am aware he is filming right now. Other actors who were filming were able to campaign for their Oscar wins. It doesn’t need to interfere.

Maybe he should tell the film company Joker is repped by to not give him props or advertising at all. That’d do the trick lol

But beside that what a flat out ridiculous statement and request.

I know you like Phoenix’ role in this film. That’s fine. But you should be intelligent enough to realise I didn’t actually mean what I said. It’s hyperbole.

ScarJo and Adam Driver don’t deserve anything either. Mediocre performances from the both of them.

I don’t think they are mediocre but Driver goes way too far in the fight scene and both of their characters are so unlikeable that it ruins the whole movie.

Having rewatched Hugo, I can now confidently say that The Irishman is the worst visual composition in Scorcese’s career. The use of CGI throughout is noticeably poor not because of a lack of craft, but poor shot choices. With CGI, you often want to avoid closeups that highlight how there is too much detail and too little humanity. The amount of skin pores is too much, it gets distracting. The outdoor shots have hideously bleached lighting that makes it feel like a dream sequence when it is in fact not. The explosions look like stage show pyrotechnics.

There were some good shots, such as the slow motion scenes, but overall The Irishman is a film dragged down by a misguided use of technology.

    For Your Consideration:

    Best Picture: Parasite
Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Best Animated Feature: Weathering With You, Promare
    Best International Film: Parasite

The Academy should just focus on actors & actresses’ performances, not their campaigning at all.

The Irishman puts me to sleep.

Tarantino films haven’t been the same since Sally Menke’s passing.

Why is Renee the frontrunner for Best Actress? If we’re talking narratives, Charlize could have rested on her laurels after Monster, but she’s put in great work in Young Adult, Tully and Mad Max: Fury Road. She was the heart of one the best films of the decade. C’mon Academy, she’s the one overdue for another Oscar.

I saw Hustlers a few days ago, and I do not understand how Jennifer Lopez is getting buzz. She’s good in the movie, but she doesn’t do anything that Constance Wu doesn’t do.

The movie was pretty meh in general. The tone was inconsistent, the characters were one-note and sometimes inconsistent, and the narrative point of the journalist coming in to interview Constance’s character was only interesting because of Julia Stiles. Also, the heist stuff didn’t hook me.

Oscars 2020: I stan Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe, Alan Silvestri, and Dean Deblois.

Emmys 2020: I stan Logan Lerman, Olivia Colman, and David Harbour.

Tom Hanks and Amy Adams stan in general.

I’ve never cared for Jack Black at the peak of his career. But the last two Jumanjis really made me appreciate his comedy style. Idk. He was even better this second time because he was playing three different people.

I just love movies. And awards.

well, Robbie doesn’t deserve it for Hollywood and that’s why I’m happy she’s getting in for Bombshell instead

    FYC

Supporting Actress = Margot Robbie = Any of her two performances.

Emily Blunt is extremely overrated, especially on these forums. She has never turned in a performance worthy enough of an Oscar and that’s why it’s only her fans/stans that cry foul when she’s snubbed. The rest of the world doesn’t care and that’s why she couldn’t build this into a narrative last year for a nomination. More talented people have fared worse than her so it’d be better if there was less moaning over her ‘snubs’ everytime she gives an above average performance in an average film.
Seriously, Devil Wears Prada, Girl on the Train, Mary Poppins Returns…That’s the performances she was robbed of? Her performances have hardly made a dent with critics or audiences. Watch her give an actual meritorious performance first and she’ll get that Oscar nom soon after.
