I have two friends who were adamant on Oscar night that The Lighthouse deserved to win Best Cinematography more than 1917. What are your guys’ opinions on this? Personally I completely disagree. Not only did 1917’s Cinematography look stunning (especially in the Night Window sequence and the finale) but the sheer amount of effort it took to make the whole thing look like one shot is mind-blowing. The Lighthouse’s cinematography is great too, but this was the one award 1917 was always winning: and in my opinion deservedly so.

I’m glad The Lighthouse did not win. We’ve seen enough black and white shots win best cinematography already

    FYC:

Chromatica: Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album.

Rain On Me: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Music Video.

    Alice: Best Pop Solo Performance

BlackKkKlansman didn’t get those awards because it was spillting votes with Black Panther. There were actually more people adamant that Black Panther nomination should happen than that BlackKkKlansman should win. And SAG-AFTRA gave Ensemble to Panther so you could easily see where votes that BlackKkKlansman needed to overtake GB went. It happens when movies have a common denominator. I think that explains Affleck-Bigelow snubs. Both directed political thrillers and split votes. Unpopular Opinion, I know. 🙂

So you’re assuming that BKM split votes with BP for what reason exactly? Because they both focus on black communities? They are completely different films, and to assume they split votes for that reason is reductive as hell.

I’m pretty sure BlackkKlansman lost because certain academy voters find his style too abrasive and preferred the more feel-good Green Book as a story about fighting against racism. I think the academy also prefers movies that are political but not aggressively so. And of course they’ve never been huge Spike Lee fans: this film was his first BP nom period, his first win, and his first nom since 1990. That’s why I think Da Five Bloods might underperform.

Matt Damon as an Actor is too subtle for his own good.

I have never seen him go showy, over the top in his films. He stays too much realistic and that kind of performances don’t win major acting awards very often.

One of the best of his generation, regardless.

I agree with PP who said Jackie Weaver deserved her SIlver Linings Oscar nod.

Sean Penn was amazing in Mystic River and deserved the win.  Marcia Gay Harden was better and her loss to Zellweger was a travesty.

Sam Mendes should have won Best Director.

I get that Parasite was indeed a near-perfect film, but Sam Mendes and 1917 should have taken it home.

I also think that Adam Sandler should have been in the final nominees for best actor then Adam Driver.

At least she’d already won for Pollock, and rightly so.

After watching my favorite film of all time, Mad Max Fury Road, I appreciate the story a whole lot more and think it’s criminally underrated. The fact that Fury Road’s story is so simple is actually what makes it so great: it’s not filled with complicated overarching plotlines like Fast and Furious, or incomprehensible plot twists like Mission Impossible Fallout, or an overabundance of characters like John Wick. It’s a simple story packed to the gills with rich themes of feminism, acceptance, redemption, and finding your place in the world; none of which ever feel preachy. It also has some of the most phenomenal characters and character arcs of the decade, and it’s the best example of great world-building in recent memory.

Also Fury Road has the best Cinematography of the decade, and Emmanuel Lubetski didn’t deserve a third Oscar.

Sam Rockwell winning for 3 Billboards was worse than Mahershala Ali winning for Green Book

The biggest problem Damon has is he’s always in movies where he has to compete against way better actors, like Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting or Christian Bale in Ford v Ferrari. When he’s the sole lead of a movie he absolutely commands the floor. (See: The Martian).

Exactly. The films are literally in two different worlds. They have nothing to do with each other.

Yep. At least Mahershala brought charisma and added depth to that character with his performance. Rockwell just didn’t do that with Three Billboards, and now he’s pigeon-holed his career into constantly playing racists who can maybe get redeemed or maybe not.

I wish he would have been nominated for Jojo Rabbit instead of Three Billboards and Vice. His performance in that movie was actually fantastic, and of course they snubbed it.
