I didn’t connect to Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Something about the chemistry between the two leads never connected for me. I felt like the girl with Brunette hair carried the whole movie despite a bad performance from the blonde one. If a movie moves that slow, it needs characters to connect to and root for; Portrait of a Lady on Fire did not have that.

A bad performance ? I’m genuinely curious since Adèle Haenel (the blonde one, Héloïse) recieved as much praise as Noémie Merlant (the brunette, Marianne) perhaps even more.

Atonement should have been nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress (both Knightley and McAvoy gave a better performance than Saoirse Ronan yet she got all the praise) and the movie should have won Best Picture without a doubt. It’s a masterpiece!

Though I agree that McAvoy and Knightley should have been nominated, I thought Saoirse was the MVP. All three of them did a phenomenal job.

agree with this except for the fact that I thought the performances were pretty good

I think she definitely deserved one. Despite its brevity, it’s a performance that’s perfectly calibrated, multifaceted and most importantly, memorably impactful. Favourite performance from the film for sure. And yes, Atonement is a romantic masterpiece.

The Irishman is Martin Scorsese’s best film this decade but it is Hugo that proves how great of a director he is.

IDK why it flopped so much. Davis and Debicki deserved better. Kaluuya was great as well.

The willful desire for award bodies to ignore despite its quality sucks. I especially hurt for Davis needing the movie to be a commercial success to leverage herself further as a leading lady in film.
