There is so much to unpack here, but for now:

The “Fuck the police” scene KILLLED me. I died. I couldn’t stop laughing.

And holy moly, Elisabeth Moss in that entire scene. That silent scream gave me chills. Please cast her in more movies.

I felt so dumb not catching onto the Hands Across America angle until the third act of the movie. My mind was absolutely blown. There is so much we have to discuss!!

OK. Performances were top notch. Lupita gave a definitive horror performance.

Now, the story. From what I got, someone created those clones and tried to use them for… something. But it didn’t work so they left the clones underground? Then Lupita came in contact with her clone, the clone took her underground and replaced her. Then the real Lupita organized a clone attack? Is this right?

Don’t get me wrong. Direction and acting were top notch. I just kinda feel we could have done without the infodumps from Red Lupita. I expected the ending to be more ambiguous and left to interpretation. Probably warrants a re-watch. I feel there’s a hidden meaning that was lost on me.

Edit: there’s a wonderful article by screenrant on the movie and it deserves a read

    Thanks for this thread.

Still thinking about this film. Gabe was pushing ke off for a moment. “Red” already showed signs but my dumbass thought she was just suffering from PTSD.

    Well I’m mixed on movie.

Lupita and Elizabeth Moss were amazing in movie

    Duke was hilarious

    but the son wassss baddd

the daughter did better with clone n later on movie.

script needed more work. Not everything worked.

    Eventhough spoilee thread I’m warning

I had an inkling when son saw her kill twin clone and she was making clone noises. Then I connected from beach conversation she had with Elizabeth Moss about not connecting with people. But nail in coffin was she knew how to go underground without getting lost in maze.

Is it bad that I am happy that the tethered Adelaide killed the OG Adelaide cause I care for those kids and she was fine if they were gonna die😂

If Adelaide had killed the Tethered Adelaide, I don’t really think she would’ve gone after the rest of the family. Her copy was her real goal: to get the life back that the Tethered stole from her (all those years with her mother gone), or at least revenge. That’s my viewpoint.

Side note: the offical Reddit for Us is cracking me up lol. And I’ll have to come up with some more stuff to talk about later because I need to stop procrastinating on sleeping lol.

The thing is, you were supposed to be happy for her. At then the twist happens. It really is a metaphor for privilege and oppression and also forgetting the sins of one’s past. Adelaide’s happiness was literally built upon the suffering of others. When she goes underground to kill Red, her focus is unwavering. She’s not doing it only for her son, but to protect the status quo and the life she has. This film really is about the fear of the privileged of being replaced by their oppressed equals. And Adelaide is the soul of this metaphor because she has climbed the ladder to happiness at the expense of her double.

Can everyone post links to interesting articles they’ve read about the film? Trying to find as many good reads as I can.

I am particularly interested in stories with a political angle, because the film was sold on the concept that it is *not* political, but I can certainly see the metaphor for “The Tethered” representing underserved communities and characters like Adelaide being a metaphor for privilege.

Did the son read as possibly being on the spectrum to anyone else? If we’re looking at it through the perspective of being about mental illness/disability, it could definitely be saying something about that. The way that he didn’t really seem to present that much emotion except for extreme outbursts, how he seemed to have trouble connecting with people, the way he constantly wore that Chewbacca mask, and the repetitive methodical clicking of the magic toy kind of seemed like signs of some sort of spectrum disorder to me? It definitely wasn’t fully addressed, though, so I can’t be sure, but if it was intentioned that way, then that could support the mental illness/disability analysis.

From the look at the end, we’re supposed to think that Jason was either switched at some point (?) or has some sort of connection to the copies. He is definitely the one that is most intuitive about the clones: he figures out that the clone will copy his movements, which kills the clone. His “weirdness” supports that he could have possibly been switched because like Adelaide, he doesn’t connect with others, and he seems to know about Adelaide without being bothered by it.

No I don’t think we’re supposed to think he was switched. I don’t really see any evidence of that.

Jason just spends the most time with the tethered and develops a better understanding of them both with his own copy and with Red (when she takes him).

To say he has some kind of a connection might be something to do with inheriting it from his mother. But, again, I don’t really see any evidence of that, and I think his character is just supposed to serve as a sort of narrative juxtaposition to the mother herself when she was young.
