for the Kim Novak role I could see them getting someone like Nicole Kidman or Emma Stone. I also do not want this remake to happen if its a play by play remake. Update it a bit and you have my attention

March 24, 2023 at 8:12 pm #1205363111I’m predicting this to be a big flop.
Hitchcock is one of the auteurs you DON’T TOUCH.
Maybe if it was based on the original novel source material and they were going for a new take on that then maybe we’d have something potentially interesting but remaking Hitchcock is BEGGING to fail
ReplyCopy URLMarch 25, 2023 at 10:19 pm #1205363947I don’t necessarily agree that Hitchcock is untouchable – if anything, him still being relevant means that some of his movies could be remade with a truly modern twist, with something new to say. The misogyny of Vertigo, for instance, could be made into a point of commentary by switching the genders of the leads.
But because modern film makers are afraid to mess with Hitch, every single remake that I know of have been bland copies of the OG masterpieces. And that’s what the new Vertigo looks like at this point. We don’t need any more of those – we didn’t need those in the first place.

Misogyny? Can you explain more?

It’s perhaps more accurate to say Vertigo is a study on misogyny. It’s pretty universally regarded to be one of the quintessential male gaze movies; Kim Novak – two decades younger than James Stewart – is a submissive object who goes along with all of Stewart’s demands. Tons of articles, essays and even books have been written on the subject. If Vertigo has to be remade I would like this to be the angle – an updated, feminist study on gender power relations.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 26, 2023 at 10:13 am #1205364314There’s absolutely no reason to remake a Hitchcock classic. Has no one learned anything since Psycho ‘98? Vertigo is fine as it is. Leave it alone Hollywood.

Reverse? You mean a woman in her 40s or 50s with a man 20 years younger? I suppose it’s was realistic or popular but ALL of the old time classics from “The Golden Age of Hollywood” were a man in his 40s with a woman 20 years younger: Casablanca (in the movie and in real life

From a botched job, his aging inability to suss out a woman within his professional male acumen. Vertigo is revered as Hitch’s self-critique (more flawless than Marnie at least), a la Ford’s Searcher.

Interesting theory

I don’t believe in “untouchables” but I do feel like this is one of those movies who are so ingrained in the minds of cinephiles and audience worldwide that any attempt of remaking it would be epic failure.
As for Downey, I feel he has so much talent in him that I truly want to see him in something original, forward-thinking. IDK.. Perhaps a movie directed by Tarantino, Fincher, Nolan or Field… I mean, I would take anything, just to stop thinking of him as Iron Man, which is his version of Jack Sparrow (like a public personal caricature).
