Unsurprisingly, The Northman is not an Oscars movie. Ugh, such a long wait!

Anya and Dafoe lost some steam here didn’t they

The Northman was my most antiquated film of 2020 ugh. I suppose Focus is now going to “focus” all of its attention on Soho. There is huge hype for the film so I’m excited to see how the film plans out. Dafoe will probably strike gold with the upcoming Lanthimos film next year. So patience…

1- The Norhman probably won’t be ready on time

2- I think they believe the movie has box office potential. April release date is great for blockbusters.

I knew something was up the second I saw test screenings were up for THIS MONTH.

It could be both, not ready in time and not meant to be an accessible Oscar player.

Anyway, looks like Focus has left for 2021:

    The Card Counter
    Last Night in Soho
    Belfast
    The Forgiven(??)

Both Last Night in Soho and Promising Young Woman initially had April release dates…

The Northman was obviously not going to be a big Oscar player as it was hyped out to be on here.

FYC Emmys: "The Crown" in all categories, "I May Destroy You" in all categories, "It's a Sin" in all categories, "Small Axe" in all categories, Billie Piper ("I Hate Suzie"), Yvonne Strahovski ("Stateless") and Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials")

Universal/Focus has too many films this year already. Smart move to release The Northman next year.

At least The Northman doesn’t have to fend off other big historical dramas like The Last Duel or Macbeth anymore.

Macbeth doesn’t sound like a “big historical drama” at all though? Wasn’t it all filmed in a studio on sets?

I meant big as in the scope of award player potential.

The Northman release date push is a boost for Belfast and Last Night in Soho, I’d guess. The Card Counter is boosted, but I’m not sure how much by given its release date is also fairly unfavourable. Focus has kind of juggled movies in the past, so I’d hedge my bets on both of them getting a sizeable push given their release dates. Shame about The Northman, though.

I guess Focus thinks that The Northman will have the commercial potential, hence the release date.
