July 6, 2019 at 6:07 pm #1202964317This one came out of nowhere. Period pieces are definitely Viola’s “specialty” if you will. But Ma Rainey was a loud, bold brassy singer who didn’t take any Sh**t from anyone! I can’t wait to see Viola’s interpretation of this iconic woman!

I love what Mo’Nique did with her in Bessie. And since Davis is the stronger actress I’m glad they didn’t default this part to Spencer.

@Handprintsandgoodgrips, unfortunately, I don’t know. I have a feeling that even if it does turn out Viola does her own singing, that won’t be revealed until the film has gone through post production, and screened.

February 29, 2020 at 11:29 am #1203365006I wonder will they have this screening at some early festivals? It’s been in post for a long time, so i’m sure there is at least an early draft of it ready for screening.

I know you’re referring to the nod count, but I really wanted Lupita to take the “Best Actress nomination after her win” standout. Fuck those nominations this year. Lupita’s role(s) showed such range and originality. Davis is very talented, but Lupes was just right there. The snub of the decade.

I’m sure they’re going for a very “late” release date. But hopefully, we will hear some info soon.

Once you see Clemency you’ll know without a shadow of a doubt who was robbed in best actress for the 2019 award season.

It’s Netflix. They’re not showing their cards early for a contender they believe in. The new Dee Rees movie is a bust so it’s getting an early direct to streaming release. It feels like the only fall release they’re hyping early is the Glenn Close / Ron Howard vehicle. Which is all to secure momentum for her with the televised precursors.
The topic ‘Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ for Netflix’ is closed to new replies.
