At least cinemas are open where you are :((((
There are only two opening on a very small and limited basis, sadly. But grateful for this during these times…
November 27, 2020 at 10:47 am #1203877701I had the leasure of seeing “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, and what a great experience it was! The makeup, the costumes, and George C Wolfe’s direction is flashy and stylish.
This film is a magnificent ensemble showcase, as the acting by all is top notch!
Chadwick Boseman gives a performance of a lifetime! What a layered emotional gut punching performance, worthy of any and every word he will receive!
Viola Davis as Ma Rainey, gives a tour de force performance. This is her unlike we’ve ever seen her, and she doesn’t miss a beat! Alot has been said about her limited screentime. But make no mistake, what she lacks in screentime, she more than makes up for it in impact. When she’s not on you’re wondering where the hell she is. She absolutely deserves to compete in lead! Without giving away any specifics in the movie, she has scenes that are award worthy, by any standard!
This will be be an awards player across the board! Fantastic movie and brilliant performances!!!November 27, 2020 at 3:16 pm #1203878223I had the leasure of seeing “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, and what a great experience it was! Chadwick Boseman:
In what was an all-around rough year, we’re at least fortunate to have not just one but two terrific Chadwick Boseman performances, counterweights to the sorrow of losing him. In Spike Lee’s fiery Vietnam-revisited drama Da 5 Bloods, Boseman plays Stormin’ Norman, a squad leader revered by his soldiers. Unlike them, he didn’t survive the war. He appears only in flashback, a righteous apparition with an encyclopedic knowledge of Black history and resistance; in Boseman’s hands, his conviction is radically alive. And in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a film adaptation of August Wilson’s 1982 play, Boseman’s portrayal of Levee, a brilliant, charismatic trumpet player, glistens: Levee’s ideas are too big for the constrained world around him, and though he carries rage and suffering in his heart, he strains to keep those those things from defining him. As Boseman plays him, his contradictions are as knotty as a flexed bicep and there’s both joy and haunted anger in his eyes. This performance is one sustained, bent note, with so many subtle gradations it registers as a symphony.Viola Davis
In George C. Wolfe’s film version of August Wilson’s play, Davis plays the Ma Rainey of the title, an artist who wears the title Mother of the Blues like a sassy celestial crown. Davis’ Rainey is imperious, demanding, beguiling and sensual. She’s also impatient with fools and preemptively furious at anyone who might try to take advantage of her. And so she makes everyone around her wait…and wait…but the anticipation is glorious. As Rainey, Davis plays every note just a hair behind the beat, and you follow willingly—as if, in the wake of her perfumed, rolling spell, there were any way to resist.November 28, 2020 at 3:09 pm #1203880558Slowly building that dual lead win narrative I see

December 2, 2020 at 8:02 am #1203889287Albeit a small critic group, but we love to see Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’s cast recognized for Best Ensemble. I suspect this will be one of many many more recognitions to come!
December 2, 2020 at 8:24 am #1203889362Andddd just like that I saw Viola’s likely Awards clip they will choose to show at all award shows, if and when she’s blessed to be nominated! The Ma Rainey’s movie page tweeted a longer clip of Ma Rainey talking about her producing team caring nothing about her, and using her for her voice! A monologue superbly delivered by Viola like only she can! Come on, 12/18!
December 2, 2020 at 9:04 am #1203889514Lol the people are shook since they dropped a longer dramatic clip of the Queen in action! I’ve seen the movie, and she completely and totally delivers! I love it!!
December 2, 2020 at 10:34 am #1203889793Wow Davis is transcendent in this.
December 2, 2020 at 2:40 pm #1203890324Up to an 88 on MC as more 100 scores pour in!
