In the play, Ma Rainey doesn’t show up until about one third through, which makes me wonder if she really can be considered lead

    They’ll reconfigure for the adaptation.

Viola will ABSOLUTELY be campaigned for lead. Call it intuition.

@lil Tony, I agree. It is simply insane that we don’t have a double black female winner yet. I have no doubt Viola will eventually be one, it will take that special project to take her to victory.
Now that her day job is over, she will probably be making alot more movies per year again. We’re only in March, and she’s already wrapped production on Suicide Squad 2 & currently shooting the now untitled movie with Sandra Bullock.

I suspect Spencer will beat her to the punch with a second win. She’s a coattail-er with all her nods being attached to best picture nominees. And whenever they wanna avoid a blackout she’s a reliable go to. Hilarious when folks argued she’d be a thing for Luce off her Academy legacy alone.

I believe this to be the case as well, though i’ve never seen the play.

For anyone who has seen the play, does Ma Rainey perform numbers/sing quite a bit in it?

@M, Spencer is a great possibility to beat her to it, for the reasons you stated.

I haven’t seen the play but read scenes from it for acting class.

Neither of them deserve/need a second Oscar

Viola Davis has range. She definitely warrants further attention from the Academy on merit alone.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha – Next!

Both Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer have the chops to get another Oscar.

Let’s wait for people to actually see the movie first before making such claims. My one hesitant right now is the director, George C. Wolfe. Despite his work being very renowned in the theatre world, the feature films he’s made so far haven’t been nearly as well regarded. As for Viola Davis, another important factor I can see working against her is that she’s won before. Academy members may end up feeling that she’s already taken care of, and move on to someone else.

Are we sure Chadwick won’t go Lead? I mean I googled Ma Rainey and all the headlines are “Chadwick Boseman’s final role” or “see pictures of the Black Panther’s stars final role” so I am not sure if publications are just being sexist against Viola or if it’s a sign Netflix are pushing Chadwick as “THE LEAD” of this film.

Also I agree with you Jeffrey Kare. It’s too early to declare a winner in a Lead acting category for any contender when half the films haven’t been released yet. I do have hope though that Davis will deliver performance wise but whether she wins I don’t know.

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", GLENN CLOSE FOR "HILLBILLY ELEGY", ANTHONY HOPKINS FOR "THE FATHER", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

She has the pedigree to be a two-time winner. And since her first win was supporting they’ll give her the upgrade eventually. Becoming more common place these days when it wasn’t when Streep blazed that trail.

Boseman wouldn’t secure a nomination if campaigned lead.

If Boseman goes lead, thats bad news for Hopkins and Kaluuya.

FYC Oscars: Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Mark Rylance (Trail of the Chicago 7), Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), Soul (Best Picture, Best Animated Feature Film, and Best Original Screenplay)

FYC Grammys: Circles (Album of the Year), Good News (Record and Song of the Year), Future Nostalgia (Album of the Year), Don't Start Now (Record and Song of the Year), Everything I Wanted (Record and Song of the Year)
