She has the pedigree to be a two-time winner. And since her first win was supporting they’ll give her the upgrade eventually.

Do Academy members even think like that anymore? Yes, her one win so far was for supporting, but an Oscar is still an Oscar, so it shouldn’t even matter what category it was in.

When was the last time an actress won an Oscar within four years of their last one. Hillary Swank? I mean I’m not saying she can’t win but it doesn’t help her that she won quite recently.

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", GLENN CLOSE FOR "HILLBILLY ELEGY", ANTHONY HOPKINS FOR "THE FATHER", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

If Boseman goes lead, thats bad news for Hopkins and Kaluuya.

Whether Chadwick Boseman goes lead or not, I think Daniel Kaluuya will still end up suffering from the whole ‘slap the stud’ syndrome as the academy (which mainly consists of old men) don’t usually like to award 20/30-something year olds in the Best Actor category.

That is very true sadly. Thats why I’m not that confident in Kaluuya’s win honestly.

FYC Oscars: Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Mark Rylance (Trail of the Chicago 7), Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), Soul (Best Picture, Best Animated Feature Film, and Best Original Screenplay)

FYC Grammys: Circles (Album of the Year), Good News (Record and Song of the Year), Future Nostalgia (Album of the Year), Don't Start Now (Record and Song of the Year), Everything I Wanted (Record and Song of the Year)

I don’t think Kaluuya is winning (right now) but I wouldn’t his age is a problem for him. His previous nomination shows he has some familiarity to the Academy and we saw how someone like Eddie Redmayne could win over Michael Keaton despite the latter being in the eventual Best Picture winner and having a veteran in a career best performance narrative.

Boseman wouldn’t secure a nomination if campaigned lead.

    That’s funny.

He’s dead. His campaign is operating on sentiment. The performance being worthy is just a formality to get nominated in the first place.

A movie about Ma Rainey reminds me of Mo’Nique’s stellar, scene-stealing performance in HBO’s Bessie. Queen Latifah may have been the lead and carried the film, but Mo’Nique reminded me why she’s an Oscar-winning actress in it. She really was the best thing about it because when she’s on, she’s on.

I feel like we can’t say his campaigning is running on sentiment when we have almost no word on his performance yet. Obviously his tragic passing will play a huge role, but if he delivers, and he always did, then that’ll also play a role.

Actors don’t get posthumous nods just because they died, they also need the performance.

As if I wasn’t excited about this film ever since it wrapped production last year, these stills have sealed the deal! Since it’s not playing any festivals, do we suspect they will begin to have special screenings for critics soon? 12/18! Can’t wait!!

Umm Chadwick’s role is incredibly baity. In fact debatably more baity than Viola’s. He probably would have been the frontrunner even if he hadn’t died.

I hate it when people say “x actor (usually Ledger since Finch was so long ago) only won because they were dead” ignoring the fact that it’s so much more likely for an actor to die and not win an Oscar than it is for them to die and win an Oscar. Boseman would be the 3rd person ever to do it.

I looked at the circumstances of all the performances that got posthumously nominated:
Jeanne Eagels’s film is pretty much lost and the Oscar ceremony that year was cancelled
Specter Tracy already had 2, but his nomination was gain because of the performance from Guess Who’s coming To Dinner
James Dean didn’t get love until he died
Ralph Richardson was more of a coattail
Massimo Troisi’s film came late in the game and no one knew who he was (outside of his home country)until he died
Finch and Ledger are considered the standouts in their respective films. That is why they won. Their deaths sort of reinforce it.
I think Chadwick Boseman will win even if he had not died. He always delivered and was considered before thanks to Get On Up and 42.

Has any critic/critics professes to have seen the movie it it’s entirety yet? I’m anxiously awaiting some commentary…

Netflix should surprise release Ma Rainey on Christmas Day. Seeing Viola slay her way through another role would be the ultimate X-MAS gift 🙌🏾
