The VFX branch has come up with their shortlist. Here are the contenders:
“Alice Through The Looking Glass”
“Arrival”
“The BFG”
“Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice”
“Captain America: Civil War”
“Deadpool”
“Deepwater Horizon”
“Doctor Strange”
“Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them”
“Independence Day: Resurgence”
“The Jungle Book”
“Kubo and the Two Strings”
“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”
“Passengers”
“Rogue One”
“Star Trek Beyond”
“Suicide Squad”
“Sully”

Nothing too unexpected – although somewhat unusual to see an animated film in the mix. Interesting omission – I thought that A Monster Calls may have had an outside shot.
Current Predictions:
Jungle Book

Dr. Strange
Arrival
Rogue One

Although the meticulous nature of stop motion is still kept very old school with KUBO, there’s still an extraordinary amount of green screen at play to composite multiple elements together. Essentially, a CG assist instead of effects animation outright. Remember that A NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS earned its only Oscar nod in this category.
I’m guessing your final 5 are more on than off, though I wouldn’t be surprised if MISS PEREGRINE makes an appearance (I’m most skeptical of Disney’s JB). The Star Trek reboot franchise scored a nod the last two times, but 3rd installments often don’t have the same traction. I can’t even speak for ID4+20 since I didn’t see it, but the original did win this category, back in a much more analog age.

Admittedly, I skipped this one but a large chunk of the reviews I read directly criticized the effects work on Rylance so I would say unlikely.
Arrival
Jungle Book
Star Wars
Doctor Strange
Fantastic BeastsFantastic Beasts is probably in my sixth position but I am somewhat hedging with Passengers. I feel like it is being underestimated for lots of techs.

Rylance gives a truly wonderful performance that helps the effects work immeasurably with his character. But the rest of the giant clan just looks too cartoony. I have a hard time seeing this get much of anything.

SullyDecember 2, 2016 at 2:36 pm #1201960644Very surprised “A Monster Calls” missed the cut. That’s the biggest miss I think. The only other big omissions would be “Legend of Tarzan”, “Assassin’s Creed” and “Ghostbusters”, though none of those had great odds at getting nominated.
Pleasantly surprised they cited “Kubo” and now sort of hoping it makes the cut.

Marked the ones I’m currently predicting.
