Is anyone else predicting The Irishman to win Best Visual Effects for the same reason First Man won last year?

Yes, it can follow the same path with VES win for supporting visual effects plus highest total of Oscar nominations in other categories. Scorsese’s Hugo did the same. However there is a small chance The Irishman misses the nomination due to arguably unconvincing de-aging of Robert De Niro (though I’m not sure what they could’ve done to make it look 100% believable), so I wouldn’t put it at the top of your predictions for now.

The results of the Visual Effects Society are in!

Lion King won, with Irishman getting supporting and Missing Link taking Animated. Does this change your predictions in any way? Keep in mind the past two years the winners here and at the Oscars have differed.

I ranked 16th, one of the best I’ve ever done with The Mandalorian the only one I got wrong (I had Game of Thrones), and both my super bets on The Irishman and Missing Link paid off. This bodes well for my predicting The Irishman at the Oscars, as both Hugo and First Man won the supporting effects award while having the most nominations of the visual effects nominees.

I am disappointed with the Irishman win. I found the effects not that great.

Yas, called that The Irishman upset (and The Lion King). Still predicting 1917 for the Oscar, even though I am not predicting it for BAFTA, so it will go into the Oscars with no precursors, but whatever.

why wouldn’t 1917 win the BAFTA? they already gave a win for an MCU film last year so a legacy-like award for EG probably won’t happen. same can be said for Star Wars  when they awarded the force awakens in 2015. The Lion King would be too safe and derivative of The Jungle Book win. so it would be up to 1917/Irishman and 1917 should have the upperhand in a British voting body.

I would think that voters awarding something would be an indication that they like that kind of thing, not that they would do the opposite the next time. I am going with The Lion King because of Star Wars actually. That BAFTA awarded VES winner The Force Awakens over Ex Machina and the other nominees tells me that BAFTA is thinking less about how visual effects are being used uniquely for story resonance and are more prone just to go with the most or biggest effects. Scale favours The Lion King.

After VES I’m thinking The Irishman will win Visual Effects instead of 1917 and avoid a shutout. I thought The Irishman would compete in the main prize and 1917 would win Supporting, but if 1917 can lose to The Irishman at VES it probably has enough support to win the Oscar as well. No film has won Best Visual Effects this decade without a precursor, and I don’t think 1917 will win at BAFTA (they never reward smaller-scale effects). I definetely don’t think The Lion King will win, and Endgame’s chances are completely dead now (as supposed to the mostly dead they were before).

    I’m still betting on Endgame.

Oscars 2020: I stan Joaquin Phoenix, Willem Dafoe, Alan Silvestri, and Dean Deblois.

Emmys 2020: I stan Logan Lerman, Olivia Colman, and David Harbour.

Tom Hanks and Amy Adams stan in general.

I had no idea until SAG. There might be something to a supposed rallying. I would probably switch to it if it wins BAFTA.
