I had a conversation with a friend and he thought Vivian Leigh’s performance in A Streetcar Named Desire was her best performance and I felt that her performance in Gone With The Wind was her better performance.

Both performances won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Many critics, fans, and film historians have noted she is probably the most deserving 2 time Oscar winning actress. I wanted to see what you guys thought.

-Which performance do you think was better?
-Do you think she deserved both wins?

    Yes she deserved both Oscars.

Gone With the Wind came with media frenzy and Lawrence Olivier brought her to meet the producers and director. She looks like the description of Scarlett in the novel.

Streetcar is such a different role. She’s pretty much out of her mind. The cast is absolutely stellar but her portrayal almost dwarfs the others (well, on par with Stella! Stella!)
That’s a personal choice. One’s not necessarily “better” than the other.

But I go with GWTW. It’s hard getting more legendary than that.

I do feel like there were more challenges she faced while filming GWTW. There were many doubters due to her being from UK and also her not being popular at the moment. I am also sure that filming took a long time which could have been stressful as well.

I believe she had been playing Blanche for some time. Not saying it was a cake walk for her, but I do believe there were less challenges, but she did suffer from bipolar which is definitely a challenge of its own.

She deserved both Oscars. It is rare when the consensus is clear about such subjective matter, but I think these two brilliant turns are rightly ranked among the best performances of all time.

I couldn’t decide which one I liked better. I should watch the movies again. For now, I remember that Gone with the Wind was a more complex experience with a more iconic performance by Leigh. But both are sublime!

I hate GWTW and love ASND. But she deserved both Oscars without question

I too believe she deserved both awards. Both performances are exquisite. If I had to choose, I would choose her performance in GWTW over her performance in ASND. That one truly blew me away. I might be prejudiced though, seeing I saw GWTW more recently.

Deserved both Oscars, no question. “Gone with the Wind” over “A Streetcar Named Desire” slightly, though. Scarlett o’effin’ Hara!

‘Streecar’ would have been truly deserving of all 4 acting Oscar’s but I did however enjoy Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen.

I have heard of some who thought Hepburn should have won for African Queen instead of Leigh but majority do feel Leigh was truly deserving. Hepburn. Might have been a distant 2nd place.

Opinions are subjective until you get to Leigh’s Oscar wins. Both were richly deserved, and I’ve never come across anyone that says otherwise. The woman was legendary!

I’d probably put Streetcar slightly ahead of Wind.

I do think she deserved both Oscars. And while I adore Gone with the Wind. I’ve read the book and seen the movies several times, performance-wise, I’d give the edge to A Streetcar Named Desire.

I had a conversation with a friend and he thought Vivian Leigh’s performance in A Streetcar Named Desire was her best performance and I felt that her performance in Gone With The Wind was her better performance.

However, I disagree with this statement overall. Her BEST performance overall was in neither film. I believe her best performance was easily in Waterloo Bridge. Just saying.

Yes. I don’t like going there. It chokes me up.

I remember Kim Hunter saying in an interview that Kazan would make Leigh do scenes over and over not Bc it wasn’t good but just to see how many times she could deliver. He didn’t consider her a great actress or along that line, (maybe on TCM or Amc when they used to give old movies )

Yes, she deserved both oscars. I think her performance on ASND is better and more complex, but her character on GNTW is more ‘iconic’ in pop culture and cinema history in general.
