January 17, 2023 at 2:32 pm #1205249835GD posters have spent all year trashing Jamie Lee Curtis’ performance just to nominate her lmao.

Glad to see Mia Goth in Best Actress, Decision to Leave in Best Editing and some love for Aftersun.

Biggest disappointment is no Best Director nomination for Martin McDonagh ): This better not happen on Oscars nominations morning!

But hasn’t it been just a few posters saying the same thing endlessly?

January 18, 2023 at 5:48 am #1205250348Great nominations, my only issue is no Best Director nomination for Martin McDonagh, very unfair, he should be winning. Everything else – awesome, no one tried to predict the Oscars this time, good job.

The majority of these nominations are copy and paste Oscar predictions…it’s the same every year! No one tried to predict them? You must be joking

What threw me was your support for Avatar. I’ve known you since forever and I’m pleasantly surprised.

I liked the first one 4/4 but this one was even better but I knw its not going to win BP at the Oscars since my second fav movie of the year is. (Banshees). I changed my prfile pic the day after the GG Awards so without the Luke Perry people might not recognize me at first. lol

Danielle Deadwyler in #Till.
When tragedy strikes, we witness her implode into a towering mess of pain and fury. But she manages to transform her pain into power that pushes her to seek justice for her son. A performance that’ll be studied for years to come.#FYC – Lead Actress pic.twitter.com/GcI4Z0OGjO

It reminds me so much of 2021 when I thought there was such a high standard of performances as an average but not any that really stood out as significantly better than the rest of the pack. I’m currently going with Yeoh because it’s so clearly a career high whereas Blanchett has actually been better in my opinion. But should I hold it against her that she didn’t quite match her own high bar? Tempted by Williams as well but it’s Supporting performance and one that I initially felt a lot of passion for but that hasn’t remained. Deadwyler and Goth both hit some incredible beats but also had moments that really took me out.

Deadwyler gives by far the best performance I’ve seen in that category this year (although I’ll see Goth to see this week) so it’s not a difficult decision for me when it comes to my Gold Derby ballot but I completely agree with your assessment re: Blanchett and Yeoh and I think that’s what makes it so difficult for me to decide who I actually want to win the Oscar in that field with Deadwyler’s absence. I thought both were excellent and that Blanchett was better even though she didn’t deliver a career best like Yeoh did but then I also wonder how much of what I liked in Blanchett’s performance was how distinctive the character she was playing was and how much of a testament that is to Field’s writing as opposed to her acting (whilst I ask myself the opposite question with Yeoh).
I personally think Riseborough gave a better performance than both of them but at the same time I’m not really feeling too enthusiastic about the idea of her winning the Oscar just because of the circumstances involved.
