This thread is stupid. The movie was pure garbage.February 25, 2019 at 11:15 am #1202794106
It was a bad movie. It would have to have something to say in order for the crtics to misunderstand it.February 27, 2019 at 9:43 am #1202797433
Paint by numbers instead of groundbreaking. Plays around with the timeline of Mercury’s life. Rami lip syncing. Queen band members ensuring they get portrayed in the best possible light. They recreate the Live Aid concert when they could easily, you know, just show it.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed it. And so did millions of people, including Academy voters. The filmmakers did not set out to win Oscars. They set out to entertain and pay tribute to a legend. And that’s what they achieved.
So in response Academy members voted it up there with Roma and The Favourite and BlacKkKlansman and Vice, even though it lacks the artistic flourish of these films, and gave it four Oscars. This Best Picture category, it’s not Most Unique and Artistic Production. That category went out after Sunrise won in the first Oscars. Best Picture could be a combination of any of these: best directed, best acted, best written, best edited, most groundbreaking, most artistic, most inspiring, most thought provoking, most entertaining or most liked film. And BoRhap does have some of those qualities for those people who vote for the Oscars.
Could they have delved deeper into Mercury’s homosexuality or battle with Aids or be more focused around the period of the Live Aid concert?Sure, but that was not the movie they set out to make. Someone else can always come along and do that sometime in the future. Maybe after the Queen members have passed on, so they don’t have their restrictions. But, why criticise a movie for the one that was not made. Ditto with Green Book and the hypothetical ‘Don Shirley’s perspective as told from a black filmmaker’s viewpoint with input from his family’s side of things’ film.February 27, 2019 at 12:01 pm #1202797625
I fully agree with FreemanGriffin, He could not say it better. It is true that the screenplay should have been more elaborated, however, They try to make it as genuine as possible. If you look at a hundred videos, they were extremely funny all the time, while recording, or giving interviews, they used to fight as siblings over the lyrics or whatever and even their fights were hilarious, Queen was a unique blend of perfection, their voices, their outrageous lyrics, the way they dressed. Every member of the band was opposite to the other yet they were able to create the most memorable chants and everlasting songs. The movie perfectly portrays the essence of Queen, their ups and downs, Freddie´s evolution, As Rami said, there were many Freddies in Freddie and he captured each of them brilliantly. Critics or detractors wanted to see more explicit sex, more drugs, more gay scenes. They were eager to see Freddie’s demons, they wanted to see Freddie getting rotten by AIDS. For that I have to say THANK YOU Brian May THANK YOU, Roger Taylor, for keeping Freddie’s private life PRIVATE, FRUIT FLIES WANTED MORE TO FEAST ON! but you remained faithful to Freddie who never wanted anybody and least of all the press digging into his life and sexuality: I personally think that the movie was brilliant in sending messages. This might be one of the reasons the “critics” did not like the movie: When Freddie said “I don´t think your parents feel proud of what you do” referring to a journalist who was bugging about his public persona- that was amazing. I just can imagine the members of the Academy laughing out loud when they watched the movie. I could bet USD1,000,000,000 if I had them, that the Academy wanted the Oscar for BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY!!! Of course, they could not do it, WHY? because the press could not find a most PROFITABLE moment to raise the BRYAN SINGER accusations 3 days after the Academy released the nominees’ names. The movie DID NOT WIN because of bloody Bryan Singer accusations, but because of THE PRESS. So, guys, this is the cruel truth! BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY WAS FOR BEST MOVIE! not Green Book. Not because of the Box Office, which, BTW is rocketing to over 1m and more just today entered the Chinese market. The Academy loved the movie because IT IS XX……..YY….GOOD!
Did you just seriously say Mercury being portrayed as gay would be the demonization of him? Also sexual assault allegations aren’t profitable for anyone, so you’re trolling is highly offensive to say the least. Also, cough up that $1 billion.February 27, 2019 at 12:03 pm #1202797631

I think the past few posts are what I totally suspected a die-hard fan of the movie would sound like, so I’m glad that person is posting. It makes me feel validated.February 27, 2019 at 1:43 pm #1202797773
I’m not madly in love with it, but I don’t think it’s as atrocious as some people say. I actually really think it’s a very Oscar bait-y kind of movie being a biopic, a self-proclaimed drama movie, and a release date so close to Oscar season. But whatever… carry on.
I just love movies. And awards.February 27, 2019 at 1:54 pm #1202797793
YOU ARE JUST BEHAVING LIKE JOURNALIST DISTORTING WHAT ONE WANT TO SAY 1) That word was written in a newspaper, when they talk about “demons” it is referred to all his internal deepest fears, forbidden desires, etc. Please come what age are you? Do you have any idea of how we lived in the ’80s, do you have any idea those words were sacrilegious. Do you have any idea that Queen was banned in the USA for the video I WANT TO BREAK FREE because they were dressed in drags? Do you have any idea that being gay was not ok in the ’80s?????? 2) For the PRESS PROFITABLE means NEWS THEY CAN SELL, NO MATTER WHAT THE ISSUE IS ABOUT IT MEANS MONEY, BAD NEWS, GOOD NEWS, TRASH NEWS THIS IS WHAT THEY SELL, THAT MEANS PROFITABLE. 3) 860.9 million USD WILL SHORTLY DUE TO THE CHINESE MARKET IS HUGE Finally, OMG! i can understand poor Freddie being questioned for any single thing he said or did. I REALLY HATE THESE THINGS, YOU WANT TO SAY STH. AND PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR A “HIDDEN WORD”, THAT DOUBBLE SENCE, TRYING TO MANIPULATE WHAT WE SAY! DON´T LOOK FOR THINGS THERE ARE NOT. DISTORTION IS STH I TRULY DISLIKE! ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LANGUAGE, I CAN MAKE MISTAKES BUT STILL I CAN SAY WHAT IS NEEDED TO BE SAID!
My god Jan, I think you BR stans purposely drive me to be the top poster in these threads. You are beyond ridiculous. It’s hard to take you seriously when it’s so obvious you’re back tracking. Sexual assault allegations isn’t the trash that belongs in the National Enquirer, they belong on the front cover of newspapers to inform others.

I absolutely love Queen and Freddie Mercury. IMHO, Bohemian Rhapsody was the worst film to be nominated for best picture that I can ever remember. I really wanted to love it. So it kind of broke my heart that the script and direction were not just pedestrian but other than the concert sequence, really bad. I love Rami too. But his performance seemed very cartoon-ish to me becasue of the script. The wigs were bad too. And the entire movie did not seem to have an accurate feeling of the seventies and eighties- which I lived through. I was more like a Lifetime biography movie. Sad.February 27, 2019 at 2:27 pm #1202797853
Thanks to the Oscars, Bohemian Rhapsody is now the fastest-selling digital download movie of all time after selling nearly 265,000 digital copies in its first eight days.
That’s so much money going into Bryan Singer’s pockets, I can’t.

And people think the Oscars should be more like the People’s Choice Awards. “The People” some times have awful taste.February 27, 2019 at 7:20 pm #1202798278
No. It was not misunderstood by the critics. If it wasn’t for Malek the film would’ve gotten the same treatment as Jem and the Holograms. The rest of the cast were very weak, Malek’s performance was the savior.February 28, 2019 at 4:14 am #1202798681
It was O.K. and not as bad as I was expecting given the reviews. Strangely very watchable for something so ordinary. Definitely not Oscar worthy, even at the nomination level in any category.
Having said that Rami Malek was the best of a underwhelming selection of performances in the lead actor category. I think it may have been the weakest line-up ever.
If I was an Academy member, I would have not selected any of the actors. And to think Ethan Hawke who swept the major critics awards was snubbed! He was so superior to the nominated actors.
