I just saw Notes on a Scandal last night. I thought Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench were excellent in it, but then I thought Cate Blanchett also had a decent amount of screentime and the story pretty much was about her character.
What do you guys think? Was she a lead or supporting performance?

She seems rather ambivalent about the film and the nomination from things I’ve read. She didn’t feel like her character’s story was told as completely as she wanted.

Bill Nighy for example is supporting.

Please send me a link about this. I have only seen her press conference at the Berlin Film Festival from 2007 with Judi Dench and others. Blanchett praised the film, director and most of all, working with Dench and the script from Patrick Marber

She’s a co-lead but this is one of those situations where I’m actually fine with her supporting placement. She did have a lot of screentime but we saw the movie mostly through Judi’s character and she narrated the movie as well.
November 12, 2020 at 1:53 pm #1203832398Like most people, I think she was the co-lead but I’m fine with her being put in supporting because of the way the story was told and from who’s perspective it was told from. Also, I think most people didn’t care because neither she nor Dench were winning their awards that year. With the way that season was turning out for Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls in Supporting and Helen Mirren in The Queen in Lead, the Oscars were just a coronation for those two. I also think this was two of their best performances, and it’s a shame Best Actress was such a foregone conclusion. The group of actresses nominated that year was much stronger than how predictable the race turned out that award season would indicate.
