1 oscar nom that turned into a win. And then after that…nothing.
Is she even a good actress, or has she just chosen the wrong roles? Will Bruised prove us all wrong…its strange to me that the first black actress winner has never gotten another nom after or significant acclaimed roles.

May 11, 2021 at 3:45 am #1204250474by the time Halle won the Oscar she was hot off her Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe winning role for Dorothy Dandridge. She didn’t just win a random Oscar out of nowhere. She was in the prime of her career.
Halle is a gifted actresses that should be getting better roles. there are plenty of roles over the years i could have seen her in…..Sandra Bullock’s role in Gravity for example.
I hope Bruised pans out well for her and she can really start directing even more and creating more opportunities for herself.
But to answer the question. She was lucky…everyone that wins is lucky.

Most Oscar winners are one and done.
ReplyCopy URLMay 11, 2021 at 6:20 am #1204250541It’s no secret how hard it is for WOC to find quality roles in Hollywood. Even if you’re an icon like Halle Berry. She’s had to fund many of her own projects just to get them made.
And after her historic Monster’s Ball win, she had Things We Lost in the Fire, Frankie & Alice (Golden Globe nominee), Cloud Atlas, and received an Emmy nod for Their Eyes Were Watching God. So the awards contending roles never stopped.

I would think her winning would equal atleast her getting offered to be apart of potential oscar conversation movies. Especially since shes the first and only.

Was Gwyneth Paltrow … lucky? Was Marlee Matlin … lucky? Was Mo’Nique … lucky? It’s also a criticism that’s normally leveled at women as opposed to men. Halle Berry fully earned her Oscar for “Monster’s Ball,” and as mentioned earlier in this thread. she was at a career peak during that time with “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge” a few years prior. She had the right performance at the right time. It’s sad that her Oscar win hasn’t opened the door for another POC win in this category for 20 years running.
ReplyCopy URLMay 11, 2021 at 10:15 am #1204250829First of all, as many people have pointed out, there are fewer opportunities for POC.
More importantly, it is even harder for actresses who are categorized as “sexy”. People often overlook their talent. Salma Hayek is another example. The three POC actresses you mentioned are not considered “sexy”.
ReplyCopy URLMay 11, 2021 at 10:25 am #1204250852Lucky? Probably. What with Sidney Poitier being honored the same night, the stars were aligned for both her and Denzel. As Washington said in his speech, the Academy was getting “two birds in one night” (they did the same thing with “Moonlight” a few years ago). I just wish the movie she won it for was of higher quality. Have any of you watched “Monster’s Ball”, lately? It’s fucking awful.

I don’t think Monster’s Ball was awful at at all. I thought it was a gripping drama with great performances.
ReplyCopy URLMay 11, 2021 at 12:34 pm #1204250987While I don’t know if I would call MONSTER’S BALL “awful” per se, I didn’t really care for it either…even when I saw it back in 2002.
Roger Ebert even called it the Best Film of 2001 which still kind of baffles me.
Berry winning was certainly a case of luck but as many have said, most Oscar winners truly are lucky.

May 11, 2021 at 1:19 pm #1204251114I think timing is everything for everyone. Halle was huge in the era of the last Superstars. I think her build-up was similar to Jennifer Lawrence in a way. Both had critically acclaimed performances before winning BA. Lawrence was in Winter’s Bone and Berry’s was in Dorothy Dandridge. Berry is often called the most beautiful woman in the world, so, to see her “ugly” her self up turns the Academy on. Plus, there had been no woman of color to win BA and many felt it was time.
When it comes to after her win, Halle did have some hit films. I feel like people have purposely tried to demolish her work after her Oscar win because they did not care for her win. Halle, til this day, gets attacked by craze fans who say “this or that Black actress should have been the first to win…” Halle has starred in Blockbusters after her win and she has had some great moments. Her performances in Things We’ve Lost in The Fire and Frankie & Alice were incredible. She was great in Cloud Atlas. She did well on her TV show Extant. Berry had an Iconic moment in Die Another Day (the swimsuit moment). I think the media and many people tend to focus on her bad moments and they ignore her good moments. Halle won at a time where there were not many films of Blacks being made. So, she was given less opportunity. I love everything about Halle. Her acting, her class, and she is absolutely gorgeous (IDC come at me).
That is why I root for her every year. I hope Bruised is good and it puts her back in the conversation.

The makeup department should’ve been work harder to make Berry look ‘ugly’ in Monster’s Ball. Seriously… she’s absolutely gorgeous the entire film lol.

She was stunning to me as well. When I said “ugly”, I meant the actions.
