I never realized she won the Golden Globe.

She absolutely was in contention and likely came in 2nd place I would bet.

For your Goldderby Film Awards consideration: Isle of Dogs for every category, especially Music Score for Alexandre Desplat!

It’s a sure thing she was in contention for the win. In fact, I think she should have won.

What puzzles me more is how her leading co-star Perkins got little to no attention.

I guess it comes down to how downright terrifying his character (and therefore, his performance) was.

The race was between Jones and Leigh – no doubt, the former was helped by voters’ overall embrace of Elmer Gantry. The other three hadn’t a real prayer, though Johns was likely a bit ahead of Knight and Ure.

Tony Perkins should have, by all rights, won Best Actor. And if Billy Wilder hadn’t been snubbed for Sunset BLVD, I’d say Psycho should’ve won Director and Picture as well.

I imagine she came in close to Shirley Jones. Oh, if only PriceWaterhouse would annually release the voting results to the general public, because we never truly know who won in a close race and who won in a landslide.

I guess Psycho was too violent for Academy tastes. Hitch got a director nomination but it missed best picture and screenplay.

Shirley Jones probably was seen as the more transformative role—the sweet girl from musicals playing a hooker.

Leigh is really subtly good though. People remember the shower scene but that scene where they have dinner together is just crackling good acting. Such tension.

Psycho is one of the most tightly directed and most concise films of all time. Not one wasted moment. Totally deserving of winning ALL the awards

They should never do that because it could change the way people vote. Academy members might vote for their friends when they otherwise wouldn’t, just to save them the embarrassment of being in last place.

If the Academy wanted to boost ratings, they should let the public vote annually for just one category where all nominees are deceased and yet the result still prompts interest. During the ceremony, the vote totals for that long ago race would be revealed. People would tune in for that!

I remember watching Elmer Gantry a long time ago, and Shirley Jones’ performance is one I just don’t really get the fuss over. And I tried.
