I was looking at the awards race in 1989 and I noticed that Jack Nicholson was nominated by both the BAFTA and the HFPA for his role as the Joker in Batman.

Was (back then) he among the predicted nominees for the Oscar nomination? Or was he an unlikely prediction?

I guess a nomination was very possible given the BAFTA/HFPA nomination and Batman being a huge film in the year.

    Anyone remember from back then?

Nicholson received rave notices from critics. He did that a lot back then. But the genre bias was thick.
The Weinstein were backing My Left Foot.
I doubt anyone beats Denzel Washington for Glory.

Does anyone know if he was being campaigned as lead or supporting. The Globes nominated him in lead while Bafta nominated him in supporting.

I know he’s the lead of that film (he literally has a bigger part than the title role), but I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to push him down into supporting.

Similar to his legendary performance in The Shinning, it was too out-of-the-box for the Academy during that time. They pretty much stuck with the same types of films when it came to performances.

But oddly if Jack hadn’t started this conversation then I doubt the 800 lbs. of ham Al Pacino gave us in Dick Tracy gets a nom.

I think he was in contention for the 5th spot and campaigned as a lead actor.

The other 4 were locks but the 5th spot was kind of open. Kenneth Brannagh getting it was kind of a big surprise.
