Trey Edward Shults’ film was the big breakout at Telluride. Will it ride this momentum through the next few weeks; A24 is releasing it on Nov. 1

No, because Moonlight is a once in a decade combination of talent, Oscar marketing, tactical voting, and political turmoil that isn’t so easily repeatable.

BUT just because it’s not Moonlight doesn’t mean it isn’t a big contender. Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Score, Editing – those are all categories it could be in.

    For Your Consideration:

Best Picture: Weathering With You, Parasite
Best Animated Feature: Weathering With You
Best International Film: Weathering With You, Parasite

Waves isn’t Adapted, it’s Original. And you forgot to type Best Picture.

I hope it’s more like Moonlight and less like Beale Street. I didn’t like the camera choices and directorial styles in IBSCT and the trailer is giving me more Beale Street vibes.

I just love movies. And awards.

Why the Moonlight comparison? This isn’t a Black queer film to my knowledge, nor one written and directed by a Black person. Just a white filmmaker centering Black characters in a movie.

It looks like pta’s Magnolia at least in its sentimentality and melodrama.

It’s set in an African-American neighborhood like Moonlight, it features the ocean as a motif, it has newcomer leads and veteran supporting actors, it’s an artsy A24 auteur movie, and in general reviews have favorably compared the visual style of Waves to Moonlight.

As interesting as it looks from the trailer, my gut tells me it’s not happening at the Oscars.

Darling, it will probably be nominated, but it isn’t winning. Next.
