Today, Warner Bros. released a trailer for a movie called Tag. The title’s not symbolic. The film is actually about a game of tag. The world’s most extreme game of tag, that is.

This is the premise: Hannibal Buress, Jon Hamm, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, and Jeremy Renner are childhood friends who have been playing a very unusual game of tag for the last 30 years. Every May, they stop their entire lives and center them entirely around playing tag, even if it means flying across the country and disrupting very important events.

For example. Ed Helms disrupted Jeremy Renner’s wedding, in the process accidentally knocking out the minister. Jon Hamm disrupted the birth of Ed Helm’s child. Jake Johnson disrupted Ed Helms’ father’s funeral. Jeremy Renner has never been tagged, and resorts to stunts comparable to what he does as Hawkeye to defeat his friends/opponents.

This is based on a true story that can be found in the Wall Street Journal. The film comes out on June 15.

Feel free to post your opinions! Will this movie be a hit or a bomb?

PS. I can’t post any links to the trailer or the WSJ story that this film is based on because the site flags my posts if they contain links for some reason.

I’m almost LOL-ing at the fact that virtually every comment on virtually every copy of the trailer on YouTube is about Jeremy Renner and the fact that Hawkeye was not in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer.

“Oh! So that’s what Hawkeye was doing when Thanos attacked!”

If that many Marvel fans associate Tag with Hawkeye, then this could very well become a cult film for an unexpected audience no matter how it performs with critics and/or the box office. Kind of like how The Matrix has apparently become a cult film among the alt-right, or how “Bronies” are now a thing.

And then there’s the fact that Renner reportedly injured himself doing stunts for of all films this one, not one of the Marvel films. Watch. All this is gonna cause there to be at least one petition for this film to be Oscar nomination #3 for Jeremy Renner, much like how there was a serious (and failed) movement to get James Franco nominated for Oscar #2 when Spring Breakers came out.  XD

And yet the disclaimer that this movie is based on a true story is not a joke. This movie apparently happened in real life, and the WSJ covered the story back in 2013 (I can’t share the link because this site flags my posts when they contain links for some reason, so you’re gonna have to Google it).

This confirms my long-held sentiment that life itself is crazier than the movies.

Okay. So I just realized that the movie is actually only loosely based on a true story. The characters in the film are not the same people who did that version of the game of tag in real life. They are fictional.

    That’s not a good sign…

UPDATE: More and more short clips are coming out on Instagram and on YouTube ads. Many of the scenes are absolutely crazy. True “WTF” moments. So I have this to say:

    1) This is going to be either really good (possibly good enough to get nominations in the comedy categories at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice), or really REALLY bad (possibly bad enough to dominate the Razzies).

    2) This is going to become a cult classic either way.

It has an interesting true story with good actors so I’ll go see it either way and hope that it’s good

First off, we don’t know for sure if the movie’s gonna be bad. The sheer absurdity of the premise and the sneak peaks posted on Instagram indicate that a surprise hit is real possibility.

And second, even if the film DOES end up being bad, what law says cult classics have to be good films on the merits?

So, the film premiered on Thursday in L.A. The first Rotten Tomatoes reviews are starting to come in.

So far, it looks good. First review is a 17/20 by FILMINK. That would give it a 100% rating on RT, although the website doesn’t say that because it’s only one review.

    I’ll update again tomorrow.

I’ve seen the story of the real-life men, and it’s actually quite touching. This film, though? Oh, it looks pretty bad. It looks like it’s going to be every comedy cliche in existence. While the real-life men have admitted to doing some crazy stunts (apparently one of them really did tag another at a funeral) some of the extreme physical stuntwork in this film makes me feel like I’m going to be facepalming with disbelief in the theater. If this movie is worse than Life Of The Party (my worst film of the year so far) God help me!

If you have a problem with extreme physical stuntwork over trivial situations, then you’re probably going to hate this movie regardless of how good or bad the reviews are.

Personally, I love that type of humor. Probably because I’m a big Family Guy fan (even though there are some episodes I find morally abhorrent) and I’m used to seeing that kind of humor in cutaway gags.

Speaking of Family Guy, I wonder if Jon Hamm will be even crazier in this movie than he was in the cutaway gag showing Don Draper using a lightsaber.
