Most of the time, category fraud for performances occur when lead performances are put in Supporting, where they can get a huge advantage over actual supporting roles. Think Alicia Vikander in the Danish Girl.

But have any cases been the opposite? Roles that are clearly brief enough to warrant being in supporting but get campaigned for Lead instead?

Olivia Colman’s performance in The Favourite is sure one of the greatest but I’ll be forever defending my claim that it’s a supporting role.

Anthony Hopkins comes to mind. Also it is not a category fraud if you are competing in Lead with a smaller role, as you are not gaining any advantage from that placement.

A few performances that I consider to be supporting nominated as leading:

Anthony Hopkins – The Silence of the Lambs
    Geraldine Page – Interiors
    Annette Bening – American Beauty
Meryl Streep – The Devil Wears Prada
    Anne Bancroft – The Graduate
Shelley Winters – A Patch of Blue
    Talia Shire – Rocky
    Valerie Perrine – Lenny
Louise Fletcher – One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Debra Winger – An Officer and a Gentleman
Mary Tyler Moore – Ordinary People
    Patricia Neal – Hud
Robin Williams – Dead Poets Society
    Peter Finch – Network
    Ron Moody – Oliver!
Maximilian Schell – Judgement at Nuremberg
    Marlon Brando – Julius Caesar

What about William Holden in Network? I don’t remember him being on the screen that much.

    Sharon Stone in Casino
    Frances McDormand for Fargo

    Maybe Steve Carell in Foxcatcher
And I thought Rosamund Pike was absent for the first half of Gone Girl.

It does not happen lately. More movies out there now

I actually think both of them were lead and their placement was correct.

    A couple more:

    Vanessa Redgrave – The Bostonians
Anne Bancroft – Agnes of God

I don’t think Geraldine Page in Interiors was supporting, she’s the central of the story in that movie

Interiors is for me an ensemble piece. And Geraldine Page really doesn’t have that much screentime in it, like 20 minutes or so. Tbh she should’ve just went Supporting for that and not only she would easily won, she would be one of the better winners in that category period. I understand why she is mostly considered a Lead of that film tho.

Shelley was nominated in supporting and she ultimately won. This movie is a little treasure!

Actually I was thinking about her performance in A Place in the Sun. Didn’t notice I put the wrong movie’s name there lol.
