Worst case of category fraud, you ask? To keep it recent:
Babel landing a Best Picture nomination. See, the category is “Best” Picture, and somehow Iñárritu’s schlockfest frauded its way into the lineup that year.
And then he did it again in 2014 and again in 2015. All frauds, because he’s a fraud!July 25, 2019 at 9:40 pm #1202996335This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.July 25, 2019 at 10:05 pm #1202996344
Rooney Mara in Carol is the worst one. The story is mainly about her character, her coming to terms with herself and her growth. IMO she is more lead than Blanchett.July 25, 2019 at 10:58 pm #1202996366
Timothy Hutton’s placement doesn’t really bother me. If he hadn’t won Joe Pesci probably would have and that performance is borderline lead too. Pesci then won 10 years later so they both were honored. (I’ve heard him say this too. He liked Hutton’s work and said he eventually won so it all worked out.)
Plus Ordinary People kind of seems like an ensemble film with all three being the leads. I almost consider it like The Big Chill or The Right Stuff where everybody got put in Supporting. (Plus I like the film a lot so I guess that helps justify it in my mind lol!)July 26, 2019 at 4:24 am #1202996586

Vikander would’ve been campaigned lead and Jones would’ve won supporting if The Theory of Everything and The Danish Girl had been released the other way around, because of the respective competition. The strategising behind these decisions is so transparent.July 26, 2019 at 5:00 am #1202996604
both rooney mara and alicia vikander (nominated lead in GG) got placed in supporting role category so that JLaw and Charlotte R nominated in lead.July 26, 2019 at 5:46 am #1202996639
I always felt that Forrest Whittaker was a supporting role in The Last King of Scotland, and James McAvoy has the lead role (which he was criminally overlooked for – he was magnificent in that role). And Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada was also a supporting role.July 26, 2019 at 6:09 am #1202996654
Darlings, Rooney Mara’s was embarrassing. She should have won Lead Actress to be honest.

Marcia Gay Harden in Pollock is part of this club as well.July 26, 2019 at 7:48 pm #1202997638
